Kirk to Enterprise, or more specifically, Kirk to Mister Scott. Mind telling me what the hell went wrong? I thought-- [Here Kirk’s voice becomes a bit muted, as though he’s turned away from his communicator. The greeters are attempting to get his attention, but the Starfleet captain is having none of that.] Hey, listen, sorry about the disturbance ( Read more... )

You're not going to be getting much beaming on what is very likely an alternate twenty-first century Earth.

The 21st century leaves plenty to be desired from a mid-23rd century viewpoint. I'm probably S.O.L. on a food synthesizer, huh?

Of course it does. But from a lot of people's views, the mid twenty-third century might leave a lot to be desired.

[ and he shakes his head. ]

No food synthesisers. Unless you count microwaves. Actually, I might just count microwaves. Depending on what you use them for.

Really, now? How so? [His voice isn't challenging; he's genuinely curious regarding the matter.]

...Well, considering I can't cook worth shit, I'm open to any pseudo-synthesizer tips you might have.

Well, for instance, in the twenty-eighth century, some offshoots of humanity go through a phase where they won't look at any technology that is more than ten years old. Then, in the thirty-third century, they consider third millenium technology no better than the stone age. Which is strange because they really aren't that much more advanced, if you really look at it. And believe me, I very definitely have looked at them. Actually, I've done more than just looking. It's considered rude to just look at people and not talk to them.

But never mind that.

I'm amazing with pseudo-synthesisers. Sort of. Well... they do tend to work for me at times...

[Mind is... mind is boggled. 28th century? 33rd?] You.. Wait, am I supposed to believe you've seen cultures that are five centuries apart?

[He laughs, though there's a note of bewilderment in it due to that.. hard-to-digest information.] Right. What's something easy for microwave-newbies to try out?

Of course I am. I'm a time traveller. I've seen cultures billions of years apart. Trillions, even, though it's best not to get into that.

[ he contemplates this for a moment before answering... ] Fish fingers. And custard.

I-- Wha-- [Give him a moment. He's trying to comprehend just how awesome it would be to pop in and out of timeframes. The poor fish fingers and custard are getting ignored because Kirk's found something so much more interesting to focus on. Not that the young captain's all that eloquent when he finally catches up with his brain.] Holy shit.
