☼ 001 - [video]

[The feed clicks on and we can see an image of a man's face. His bright eyes are wide with something like curiosity, and he's kind of grinning as he turns the device in his hands with a low whistle.]

Man, this is way fancier than any equipment I ever got at work. It's the swankiest walkie-talkie I've ever seen! [He gives an amused laugh, then ( Read more... )

Oh, it's not magic. It's a simple video feed, that's all.

[He snorts a laugh and waves one hand.]

Perhaps that was poor word choice on my part. I know magic when I see it; this video chatting is a bit new to me, is all.

How can you know something that doesn't exist?

What, magic? [What rock has she been hiding under?] Magic exists, that's how I know. [Of course...]

[she's been in space ; ;] Of course it doesn't. Magic is just what most races call science they don't yet understand.

[Eyebrow. Science. Axel hates science. So rather than attempting to argue the point, he just holds the NV at arm's length and snaps the fingers of his other hand. Suddenly his whole arm is engulfed in flames from the elbow. Nope, it doesn't hurt, either.] Got some science for this?

A simple matter of using conductive materials on the exterior of your clothing, something flammable but light-weight, with an ignition -- most probably flint or something similarly rough -- attached to your fingers. When you snap, a spark ignites the flammable material along your arm.

Simple.

[He quirks his mouth--okay, fair enough--and arches one eyebrow. Very well then. How about this? Without moving his arm at all, the flames go out. The fabric of his sleeve is completely undamaged.]

All right, I suppose I walked into that one. I could do it with no sleeves or gloves if you prefer, but somehow I get the feeling you'd have a smart answer for that, too.

[Ugh, scientists. They think they know everything.]

[scientists are the best!!!!!]

Oh, that is very clever. A perception filter, perhaps? A simple enough trick to convince those watching of what you've done. Though those don't usually work on me, so it's doubtful. And quite frankly, you don't look smart enough to make one.

Of course, you could just be a fire-attributed species, like the Pyrovile. Well, not exactly like them, as they're extinct and they were made of stone. Isn't that clever, being made of molten rock? But yes, it could just be your physiology that allows you to sustain and create flame. There are about two dozen such species in the universe, you know.

Percep-- Look, lady, I know we just met and all, but why in all the worlds would I bother setting up a perception filter? You make it sound like I actually give a moogle's ass what the general people think of me.

I can't speak for the cleverness of being made of molten rock, as I'm not in fact made of molten rock, but... You know what, science gives me a headache. I get the feeling that demonstrating any of the more standard spells I know will get me nowhere with you. [Besides, he kind of sucks at anything but Fire anyway.]

It isn't always a matter of "setting up," you know. Some species do it naturally. You really don't know much about them, do you?

A "moogle?"

Oh, you can do more tricks? I'd love to see them. [tooooootally ignoring that science jab there, Axel]

[..............] Are you always this patronizing, or should I feel special?

[SIGH. Well, he's got nothing better to do at the moment.]

Moogles are little critters from my world. Er... worlds. Er... [He waves a hand.] They're not uncommon where I come from. They kinda look like... little bears, I guess? With wings and a pompom on their head that's totally vestigial so far as I can tell. [He folds his arms then.] Little bastards'll wheedle you out of your last ten munny, too, I tell you what. Don't ever try and haggle with a moogle.

[And then he narrows one eye.] Why, so you can pick those apart, too? Wanna see 'em in person so you can't say it's cuz I set my sleeve on fire? Oh ye of little faith...

Hmmm? I wouldn't consider you special, no.

I've yet to see a moogle. I think I should like to add them to my databanks. Are any here, or did they all remain in your universe when you were pulled here? Though I wonder if the Core is even capable of pulling multiple creatures at once. Perhaps that's the source of the Darkness and the monsters? Oh, this will require further study.

[distracted thinking of moogles and then] ...you mean you'd show me?

[He can't tell if she's actually being rude or if she's just being candid. Either way he's difficult to really offend, and he's inclined to think there's something just a hair off about her anyway.]

Your... databanks? [Headscratch. Unusual word choice, but whatever blows your hair back.] I haven't seen any here, but ah, I guess I can let you know if I come across one, Miss, ah...? [His eyebrows lift in inquiry.

[And then he blinks.] Sure, why not? [Now he's really not sure what to think. She says magic doesn't exist, but then wants a demonstration anyway? He can't quite figure you out, lady. And that's interesting.] I mean, it's not like I have other very pressing business or anything. I never thought magic was that extraordinary--it's not that uncommon where I come from...

That's where I store all the data I accumulate, yes. Though that might be inaccurate now. Humans don't have databanks, do they? And if you could, I would appreciate it.

You can call me the TARDIS. That seems to be the best name for me here. I'm still getting used to names, though.

Splendid! I'd like to see the extent of your physiological abilities. [because they're totally not magic. nope]
