[one might consider a creature that is more or less a shadow of another-- and enough of just a shadow to pick up on the emotions of whoever's light they're standing behind-- an unfortunate soul. unfortunate or not, for the majority of his existence, Vanitas has been trying with everything in his being to keep every single schmoopy wisp of affection

[no. nonononononono no no no no-- that would be his reaction... if Vanitas were. you know, in his right mind.]

[but all he has right now is that brotherly love Ventus feels for Roxas hovering over his heart like how a hideous rainbow might clear up a thunderstorm, so the minute he spots Roxas, he's turning on his heels and walking over.]

[Roxas wasn't planning on starting a fight, but if Vanitas is ready for the next round, he'll oblige. He steels himself as he waits for Vanitas, ready to summon his Keyblades at any moment.]

What do you want?

[you don't get an answer, Roxas. you don't even get any verbal acknowledgment, Vanitas just keeps walking until he's a mere few feet away, calm as can be.]

[If that's how it's going to be, fine. Roxas glares at Vanitas and waits for him to make the first move.]

[hope you're ready for this, Roxas, because whatever modicum of Vanitas' sanity that is still left, and screaming at him to break Roxas' neck sure isn't. a few steps closer and he's invading personal space, he's grabbing Roxas' arm and tugging him into a bone crushing hug.]

[because you are close enough to be Ventus'-- his-- brother, Roxas, and Vanitas loves you.]

[what what WHAT. Roxas goes completely rigid for a moment, stunned into immobility, before fruitlessly trying to claw his way free of the embrace.]

What-what are you doing?!

I don't know.

[he snarls through gritted teeth. but he's not letting go, either. brothers, Roxas. they are brothers.]

Well, stop it!

[Vanitas is not the brother he wants! Roxas struggles harder, but wow, this is an iron grip.]

I'm trying.

[but no, he just tightens his grip. if Vanitas wasn't visibly frustrated, he might have been able to pass this off as a cruel joke.]

Seriously, what's wrong with you? Let me go!

[Struggling harder! Trying not to freak out too badly. Failing.]

[all right all right, Vanitas' death grip finally loosens, and he takes a sudden step back. but he doesn't lift a hand again or call his weapon; Roxas could probably get a punch in if he wanted.]

[Instinctively, Roxas shoves away and takes a quick step back, but he doesn't attack. It would be wrong, trying to hurt someone who's being so...affectionate.

How can Vanitas be affectionate?]

Is this some kind of trick?

No. [there's something in his tone that suggests that he's about as perplexed as Roxas is. or maybe he's just resigned to no longer being in control. it's impossible to tell.]

So what is it, then?

[Roxas doesn't understand any of it.]

[Vanitas cuts off into silence, bewilderment etching on his face. he isn't angry, though.]
