[It is rare for Liquid to sound truly shaken.

Shocked, angry, even, rarely, miserable, yes. But it takes a lot to shake him. First Yaha and now-]

Shinji Nishizono is dead. By correlation, that also means Kazuhiko Amamiya and Murata are dead too.

[His breathing comes shakily and for a moment his words come out muffled, as if against someone's ( Read more... )

...I'm sorry, Liquid.

[She is, honestly. No one deserved death, especially not Kazuhiko. Especially not a second time.]

...

[He's tempted to snap at her, his nerves frayed to the extreme, but he holds back on it and bites his tongue. No. This isn't right. For someone like him who has seen so many deaths, he should not be affected so badly. He should not allow it to make him reckless or stupid. He should not-!]

Thank you, Re-l Mayer.

[If the rumors are true and he and Shinji were close...]

It's very little, but I am sorry that you've lost someone you care for.

We were lovers, Re-l Mayer. And I was friends with two more of his personalities.

[Although she can't see it, his arms are wrapped tightly around Shinji.]

I don't think he'd return the sentiment if it were you.

...I see.

[And it's a good thing she can't.]

That's neither here nor there. I don't care if he'd return the sentiment. The point is that you're in pain. That's it.

You should be happy. Yaha, Shinji... Neither of them can trouble you any more.

Pain is nothing. Yet still it incapacitates me so easily. I don't understand any of this.

I'm glad they won't trouble me but that doesn't mean I'm happy that they're dead.

Emotional pain is different from the physical. You know that.

Yes. It feels like I've grown weak, to enable anyone to affect me this badly. There was a time when I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

[She pauses.]

...That sounds like something I'd say.

[That gives him pause.] ...heh. It seems we have something in common, then.

[She nods and then realizes he can't see her.]

Back home, showing emotion was...practically prohibited. There was no need for such things. It showed weakness. But that's not true, not always.

Hah... that's similar to what the Patriots tried to teach me. I was too emotional to learn it, but it became ingrained before long. "Attachment is weakness", "emotions are unnecessary". For tools like us, it was important that we didn't get distracted by such weak things.

Odd... Snake was the one with the normal life and yet he seems to have followed those tenets much easier.
