[ A difficult question, and not one he's certain how to answer. Eventually he does, though, one ear splaying out. ]

I suppose I am not really qualified to answer. A family is a group of people with a bond with one another-- one not only of loyalty, but duty as well. There are rights and obligations each member must fulfill.

[ This is hard to explain... ] I would protect someone I consider a member of my family, if I thought they ever had need of it. In return, I would expect them to do the same for me.

But it is not a thing spoken of with words, as an oath to one's king and country would be. It is simply there.

what if you want to protect other people but don't want that in return? because they could get hurt themselves trying to protect you

It is in my experience that people will often do their best to protect what is important to them, regardless of whether or not it is appreciated.

I believe the bond of family must be based on recognizing and respecting each other's strength and weaknesses. Perhaps the people who would wish to protect you see a weakness you do not.

But what if they wish to see you safe, as well?

Have you ever studied how to fight, or how to dance? Did your instructor correct your steps, or give you advice on the proper posture? These are things you did not know you were erring in until they were shown to you. We can learn much from how other people perceive us.
