I never had powers back home, and while we didn't exactly have Darkness monsters, we did have other dangers. Trolls mostly, but we had knights and patrolmen to keep them out of the village.

Here we have Darkness shielding, which is supposed to be pretty reliable - [ Though it's failed on more than one occasion. ] Coping - I consider them the same as any other danger I'd face back home. And, well, by trying to learn ways to protect myself in the event something did happen. There are people here who'll teach you the sword, or that ... "gun" if you can get one.

I guess it's a little different, if you had creatures to worry about back home. [Trolls. F-fff.] There was nothing like this at home. The worst I'd heard of was human crime, never anything .. supernatural.

Well. Not counting the last few months before coming here, but.

It's the nearest way I can think of it - the only way to really make sense to me. I have to remind myself I can't really climb up onto the roof and watch the stars, or go out for a walk at night anymore. At least not without taking a lot of precautions.

Even looking out the window it's a little creepy, seeing things flying past the window and knowing they aren't bats or birds or something. The protection on the house is pretty decent, and I don't live alone, so that helps too. Having someone else in the house, I mean.

Do you live alone?

[She nods; oh there were times she missed watching the stars. Now it just seemed like a waste of time, as much as she dreamed of them.]

No- No I live with a few people. It's still pretty quiet though, they're all kind of capable in the whole defend-yourself department. It kind of amplifies how ... I guess weak, is the easiest way to put it. I'm hopeless against any sort of monster.

But you don't have to be. That's why I wanted to learn how to defend myself - there's no social stigma about learning how to fight, or learning self defense here like there is back home. Not that it'd stop me anyway but I had ...other things to worry about at the time.

Why not learn to fight?

I. It's more like I'm... too chicken. If I was scared about something back home I always ran away. [She huffs a laugh] Or hid in the church. I don't know if I'm .. cut out for being a fighter.

I don't mean to sound like I'm making up excuses, though, I just. [Have never done anything like this before.]

Being a fighter is different from learning how to defend yourself though. Being a fighter- you might be more proactive about it, but learning to defend yourself - that's when you don't have the option to run away, or if someone isn't around to help you. Everyone should at least know that; especially women.

No, no, it's okay. I mean, it's actually understandable if you never had this sort of problem back home. I guess where you're from you didn't really need to learn to fight if you could always get away. I suppose you could still avoid that here, if you don't ever go outside at night, and avoid situations like that, but...

Yeah. Self defense is.. Yeah. [It's better than nothing, and while she wishes it wasn't necessary, no world was ever perfect enough for that.]

I try not to go out unless I need to-- and even then I don't go out alone. But you were right; not being able to see the night anymore kind of gets to you after a while.

[ Self defense is 'yeah' all right. And Ella would agree - she wished that it wasn't necessary to have to learn it. ]

Well you're one up on me there. [ Because Ella, when she had to go out, often went alone. THough it helped that most of the time Griffin was already out, or he'd get peeved at her. He was still mad she went to the lighthouse. ]

I thought about at least putting a skylight in the roof, but I think that'd detract from watching the stars if a darkness monster hurled itself at the glass. Especially if the glass didn't hold. [ She chuckles weakly. ]

[Yeahh it's not hard to imagine him flipping out over something like that.]

Well- it might not be so bad; you could get it darkness proofed, too? Maybe... someone around the city knows how to put a barrier on it or something- so they don't fly into it?

[It was a stretch but, well. She'd seen plenty of other weird stuff come out of the city before.]

[ A thoughtful hmmm follows that. ] Well darkness proofing it could work. [ Provided the Darkness Proofing doesn't fail. ] But by barrier - do you mean like those eliminators I heard about? The ones for bugs?

[ That would be both hilarious and a light show. ]

Bugs-- Oh, like a screen or something? Electric zapper maybe?

Some sort of shield, I guess.

Zapper -- er, yes, that must be it. That sounds about right anyway. Sorry, I remember seeing the advertisement briefly, but I didn't pay close enough attention to it to remember the name.

[ Because she had run out of the room before the advert could say, 'ORDER ONE NOW'. *cough* ]

Anyway, that might work. It'll probably cost a lot of money though - and ... I should probably watch my finances. [ Especially with her stepsister here. ] It's something to save up for anyway.

Couldn't hurt, yeah. Just as, like a goal or a wishlist sort of thing? It'd be great if it meant you could see the stars again safely, right?

Right! And you know, if you like, if I manage to get it done and it's safe, you can come to see the stars anytime too.

[ Come to think of it, she did have a spare room she'd been thinking about converting into an indoor garden. She could renovate that one instead, if she wanted. Hrm! ]

That'd be nice. Really nice, actually. But, hey if you need any help getting it set up or.. finding out about it, I could help you there?

[Indoor garden sounds kind of awesome, ngl.]
