[The brunette on the video sports quite a few cuts and bruises; it looks like someone didn’t take her first night out seriously enough. From the scene behind her, she’s in the shelter-dugout, for those who would recognize it.] Okay, newsflash of the hour: humans totally have parental instincts coded into them, and it sucks ( Read more... )

[He'd been half imagining that every post that he heard was made with her voice, to be honest. Ever since Kara had shown up, Clark had been on the edge of his seat expecting to hear Lois' voice, then shooting himself down for being excited about it.

So when he actually heard her voice... He almost didn't believe it. And then she kept talking. Six words in, he knew he wasn't imagining it, and picked up his NV. The crystal came to life, flickering the video image on as the recording continued.

Lois.]

[It's definitely her. No chance of it being an interloper, or someone who sounds a bit like her. When she touches the cut on the cheek he flinches, reaches out for the live feed and then hesitated, drawing his hand back.

When she says her name and he breaks into a smile, and then he tilts his head and listens; listens for her heartbeat, proves to himself that it's real. It's definitely her.]

[And then reminds himself of Kara and how similar she was, and yet how different. She'd looked the same, sounded the same, remembered some of the same things, but she hadn't been his Kara. And if this wasn't his Lois - nevermind that he was sure that he'd recognise her anywhere - he didn't know what he'd do.

What if she was the Lois from Bruce's world, or worse? What if she was in love with some other Superman? What if she'd never met him? There's a thousand different horrible possibilities.]

[So as much as he wants to, he decides not to respond--and promptly spends the next five minutes staring into his closet and weighing out whether or not he ought to be dressing in the three-piece suit or the red and blue.

And pretending to himself that every minute spent deciding isn't agony. That he wants to know sooner and get it over with so that he doesn't have to worry about it any more. He pretends to himself that he doesn't want to pull her into his arms and protect her from the Darkness - even though he's listening intently for any sign of monsters going after her, or worse, her going after the monsters - and that it's okay to hold off while he gets his own racing heart under control.

More than that he needs to give her a chance to get her footing, ask some questions, prepare herself for the inevitable, before he goes rushing in and potentially explodes everything in her face.

Is it true? Does he really look different enough as Superman to fool her? He's honestly not sure he believes it. If anything it would be the ultimate ( ... )

Yes, it's definitely a good idea to wait till morning sirens before poking around out-of-doors any further. But the network is always an available source of information.

Welcome anyway Miss Lane, poor as our welcomes may be, to Siren's Port. I'm Dr. Daedalus Yumeno, and...I'm glad to see you're together in one piece, but you should take even that smallest injury out there seriously, and be sure to get cleaned off properly when possible.

As for "It Sucks", a biological predisposition towards child-attachment does ensure the survival of species. Unfortunately, certain creatures out there are known to bank on that as a weakness.

I haven't figured out all of the network stuff yet.

Well, I guess I will follow doctor's orders, if you say that even small cuts are a thing. Why, does the Darkness get into the bloodstream or something?

...Do, uh, any more of them do that? Or is it just that kind of creepy small child-shaped creature?

Take your time. Explore. You're going to be here awhile, so you may as well familiarize yourself.

And...not the DDE itself so much as the things that dwell in it, potentially. With certain creatures- and broken skin always runs the risk of infection.

What you've encountered is probably a "Bitter Child". We have them listed in the Blue Binder here. The night clinic doctors hear a lot about what's what out there. You're lucky it wasn't the type that spits something particularly noxious.

DDE? What's that stand for, exactly?

Yeah, I've had pretty notorious luck, as a rule. This Blue Binder--is it open to the general public? And it has information about what goes bump in the night?

There's-- a lot of information on this place.

But you shouldn't be out at night if you just got here!

What'd you say the best way to get it is, kid?

And 'shouldn't' has never really been part of my vocabulary.

Asking around? Libraries? Keeping an eye on the news?

Unless you've got some really heavy super power, it's a bad idea to go outside without getting used to this place first. Especially since there might be some Darkness parasite or something.

So I guess most people stay in, huh?

All right then. So what about you? What would you say about this place?

They were pretty determined to get blood samples.

Okay. That... is a step up. I hold to my stance on horror movie screenings, though.

...Kind of you to offer. And you would be?

[From her tone, that was not an acceptance. She doesn't trust the new person.]

Elaine Mallory.

[Yeah...she's not going to tack on the "Wizard" part just yet. They can just be mutually suspicious for a while.]

Well, word is that it's pretty not safe out here, Elaine, so no reason for two of us to get cut up.

Nice of you to be willing to risk your neck for a stranger, though.
