[ the camera is angled, gazing down on a chessboard resting on a surface draped with unblemished white. Its varnished surface looks somewhat dismal - the black-and-white squares faded, marred by abrasions and dull thin scratches exposing the rust-red wood underneath. Though all of the black pieces are lined up at one end, a white pawn stands alone ( Read more... )

[Naoya is silent for a while as he listens, his eyes closed. Interesting...interesting. You've gotten his attention, Bern, for better or for worse.]

...Heh. [He opens his eyes, smirking.] She'll never notice the weight she carries, no matter if it's eight or eight hundred.

Oh, she notices. However, those people were just obstacles in her search for truth. Why should she care, if their existence was to be brought to a sudden end?

It's not quite the same. She doesn't feel the weight, because those people were no longer 'human'. Simply things in the way.

No one feels guilty for destroying the roadblock--to her, it's the same thing. Humans justify themselves in all sorts of ways...it's a little amazing how much they can rationalize.

[It provides him with a sort of strange amusement, when he's not furious at the unfairness of at all. He killed one, not knowing what the price would be, and he can never escape that. But those who kill thousands and deny to themselves the reality of what they've done...

...He wonders sometimes if that was something He added, but he honestly doesn't care.]

Yes. And, when they can't find a logical reason to explain themselves, most of them'll just turn to the supernatural. "The devil made me do it", and so on and so forth.

Or they've done it in the name of some higher purpose. The hypocrisy would be infuriating if it wasn't so funny.

[ "infuriating"... an odd choice of words. ]

Killing in God's name is funny enough on its own. Heaven is pretty merciless when it comes to murderers.

[Naoya's lips...twitch. He's angry, and part of him wants to snap, but...

But he knows he's being watched, and something in her smile tells him that she's looking for that sort of reaction. So he swallows his smile and laughs, and if his laugh has a definite bitter edge to it, well. She could draw her own conclusion.]

That implies Heaven is merciful or loving at all.

[ oh, she will - though that conclusion is something she'll keep to herself. successful troll is accidentally successful. ]

It can be. Who knows...? With a little luck, that might happen. The servants of Heaven are only that, and servants are always fallible.

Fallible, hypocritical, and petty. No better than their Master.

[Breathe out. Keep the appearance of calm. It's...difficult, more than he wants to admit. ]

[ it's a pity neither the Eiserne Jungfrau nor the SSVD are here... it would be interesting having those servants of Heaven meeting this guy. ]

That's a pretty impressive grudge you have there.

Grudge? Nothing I'm saying can't be held up by that beloved book His followers cling to. [But there's an acidic edge to his tone and Naoya knows he's not really fooling anyone.]

...Whatever grudge I might have doesn't invalidate what I'm saying, in any case.

No, it doesn't. But, I wasn't really expecting anyone to stay impartial, listening to this story. [ a slight pause. ] That would take something of a miracle.

Miracles are just a deal you didn't know the price for. [Naoya sighs. He's had no need for 'miracles' for--too long. But something about the way she said it has his interest.]

Are they...? Miracles aren't like wishes, to be made on something trivial like a falling star. People who ask for them usually expect to pay a heavy price.

Not so--the classic definition of a miracle is something from nothing--something good. No one notices the price they paid for something like that unless it's spelled out up-front, and then they're likely to think of it as a bargain.

[He pauses for a moment, and smirks faintly.] But then again, I've never had much use for depending on anything but my own strength.

[Hypocritical and not entirely correct, but Bernkastel needn't know. His contracts he forged with his own unbreakable will, his power he'd gained on his own--Naoya prides himself on self-reliance even as he uses other people as pawns.]

[ "classic"... she's never been a staunch supporter for tradition and the ennui it brings, but if that's what other people want to believe... well, they were the ones asking her for miracles, not the other way around. ]

Is that right? It could be considered admirable. People who don't ask for help can occasionally claw their way through hell and end up all the stronger for it.
