And, what if what you were trying to accomplish was worth everything? That's a common view that humans have, right, to sacrifice it all for some idea or purpose...?

It's usually considered noble, not selfish, to do something like that.

Maybe not, but there are people who see every struggle as a war to be fought. And, in a war, crushing and trampling those who stand in the way of victory is nothing to lose sleep over. It's heroic, even.
