[ When the feed comes on, the camera is panning over a sparsely-furnished office. The area seems to have been only recently renovated. For those who are familiar with the Newcomer Community Center, they'll recognize it as one of the offices on the second floor. ]
Well, it's not much to look at yet, but this is where I'll be working from now on.
[ Though actually, it's just adjacent to where she used to work, which was Re-l's office in the NCC. As though on cue, the camera swivels around to where Yako, in casual corporate attire, is setting up a computer on her desk-- the most visibly new piece of furniture in the room. She doesn't look up, though she continues speaking. ] In any case, I wanted to talk to the network about a few things.
First off, it's almost the end of the month. That means the leases on some of the Tower Apartments will be expiring soon. You can choose to pay the rent and stay another month. Or you can look for different living arrangements. [ She smiles, wryly. ] It's often easier to find someone to room with, and split the rent. If you can find someone willing to take you on as a boarder, that's even better.
If you're still looking for a job, there are plenty available-- it just depends on how willing you are to learn, or what skills you already have. Being affiliated with one of the companies will improve your chances of getting hired by local businesses, but it's not mandatory, and there are neutral jobs. I can help you narrow down your options, if you don't know where to start. You can also work in places that are Newcomer-owned, there are a number of them in the city, but I don't know which of them are hiring at the moment.
[ She turns to the camera, questioningly. ] If you happen to be running a business yourself, please let me know. I'm compiling a directory for easier reference.
[ And now, to move on to other things. She stands up, dusting her skirt off, and picks up the NV ] In case you haven't heard about it, we have a Newcomer Community Center. It's owned and run by the Newcomer Political Party, just around the corner from the baseball diamond. There's a clinic on the first floor, which treats Newcomers for free-- you can find more information about it here. [ And at this point a text
link to Daedalus' post on the clinic. ]
The building also has a large multi-purpose hall that can be rented, as long as it's for Newcomer-related activities. [ Chin on hand. ] Having said that, it really doesn't see much use, and I've been trying to think of better ways to use that space. It's definitely on short notice, but if there are enough people willing to volunteer their time, how about summer workshops, or tutorials? It's a good chance to learn something new, but only if there are people willing to teach.
Finally, I'm looking for fundraising ideas! [ She grins, because this is the part she wanted to talk about the most. ] What kinds of activities would you be interested in participating in? What events would you like to see? Any profit made from these will go to the NPP to keep us running, and to give us a shot at securing better Newcomer representation.
For ideas, we've currently got... [ And she flips open a notepad. ] "Talent Show," "Bake Sale," "Beach Party," "Yard Sale," "Cooking Contest," "Newcomer Pin-Up Calendar," "Apartment Fix-upper," "Date Auction" and... [ "Life-sized Cardboard Cut-Out of Re-l Mayer" wouldn't go over well with her boss, probably. Time to catch her breath: ] ... "Official NPP Merchandise." That's it, so far. These aren't the only things we're going to do to raise money, and donations are always welcome, but it's more fun if you can do something with everyone else, right?
Let me know what you think, and if you'd be interested in actually running any of these!
[ the post is later edited to add (in text) suggestions from other Newcomers, as well as Yako's own notes: ]

Cross-dressing Beauty Pageant
Newcomer Prom - formal dance with raffle, live band, photograph-taking?

[ ooc; NPP people are free to recognize (or not recognize) Yako, who's just been made the head of the NPP's Fundraising and Promotion Committee. Which currently consists of, uh, just her. Plotting on the OOC side can go down once the CR meme actually goes up, so feel free to... totally spam and threadjack all over this post. Let the good times troll. ]
