[Light's room at the University is bare and empty. Everything is packed into boxes and stacked by the door - invisible - and the blinds are pulled shut behind him. The lights are off, but the light of the NV offers a soft red glow, enough to just pick out the contours of Light's face, and brighten his eyes to an almost maniacal pitch.]

Don't you think you're taking this rather harshly?

As compared to? I have spent my entire life preparing for this moment, only to have it ripped from me, with no hope of redemption. How do you think I ought to feel?

Ah, so you were preparing for something similar back home, I take it.

For the record, I would suggest not wishing everyone else to doom and failure due to one unforeseen shortcoming.

The darker your despair, the more grateful you will be to the one that lifts you from it.

Wouldn't it be better to not despair at all?

That is up to you, not me, Miss von Karma. For someone who quit the law, you are being rather self-righteous.

I wouldn't use the term 'quit' as such. Not entirely. Well, that's neither here nor there -- is there some reason why I ought not to be self-righteous at this moment in time?

Perhaps because it makes you even more infuriating than usual?

Is this a point of concern?

You ought to consider it one.

Tell me, why did you leave your profession?

Firstly, you ought to tell me how that is relevant to our current conversation.

Why don't you tell me how it's irrelevant? The city's justice system didn't support your passion for the law, did it?

You're only seeing the very surface of the problem.

So you admit there is a problem? That's a step up. Tell me, then, if I'm so ignorant.

If you've been paying attention to the news, then you would know that my last trial was a success. The system here is sufficient, to that end. No, the problem is the corruption of the companies, and how they affect this city even more insidiously than what is immediately obvious. So while the legal infrastructure supports the laws, you could say that the law here does not support my passion for justice.

Does that make things any more clearer for you?

It does. So you did quit because you have no faith.
