A woman I spoke to when I first arrived said that some natives also developed powers. We considered that it might be something in the water or soil. Some type of mutagen or chemical.

Only some? Or all?

A mutagen would take time to work on a Newcomer. I think it's the Core itself.

More natives than newcomers, but not all. Those born here in recent years tend to be more of a certainity.

It seems an odd thing for a machine like that to do. To grant abilities like some kind of genie.

Hm. That's interesting. I assumed they all had one.

Not everyone. Apparently not all powerless newcomers get them also. Or if they do, they're unnoticeable.

Passive abilities, perhaps. I'm sure it would be almost impossible to detect.

Possibly. I can think of a few things offhand that could be unnoticeable like that.

That would be very difficult to study. I'm not sure even the user would know they've got their ability.

True. Short of dissecting them to find out if there's anything different in their brain or body, I doubt there's many ways to find it out. Especially if it doesn't leave any noticeable traces.

[hnnnng. that's a good idea. one he's entertained several times.]

Most likely not. It'd probably seem natural to the user and the victim.

Like the language. How we can speak english so natural even if we couldn't before. It simply becomes part of us. But changes like that have to leave traces, even if they're just inside.

...I wonder how many people deny they have abilities simply out of fear, also.

So far, two or three.

I suppose a lot of people probably won't answer at all for that same reason. Or possibly in order to keep their powers secret to prevent them being taken advantage of or having others figure out how to stop them.

I don't mind if they reply anonymously. I've had a few people reply without a name.

It'd still be impossible to survey everyone. People are far from reasonable on that front.

Oh, I know. I'm just curious in who I can survey. That's good enough for me. Any data is usable data.
