first call - backdated three hours before dawn

May 14, 2011 13:50

[ In the depths of the Darkness, gunshots echoed through the night. A young voice calls out, feminine but blunted by life’s gravity, spilling out swears as easily as her rifle ejects empty shells. ]

Francis! Louis!

[ A screech filters through, something inhuman - or maybe it once was human - before a wet schunk splatters to the ground, like maybe a ( Read more... )

[Sarina has a bit of a sheepish look, as she starts a video feed.]

Well -- hahaha -- I guess I don't have to warn you about the Darkness monsters, at least.

Darkness monsters. Really? That's what they call them? And when they show up?

[ They almost look like the mutated zombies - but she's pretty sure these things are a different deal entirely. A monster virus, maybe? ]

Well, that's kind of the general term; there's different names for each of the different types of monsters too. Heeheehee -- they only show up at night time though. During the day, it's relatively peaceful.

[And less fun. If she weren't on break at work, she'd be out there fighting them all.]

Seriously?

That . . . doesn't sound too bad. [ Compared to the zombies that are always active, twenty-four seven, five days a week, no vacation time. ] How are people holding up with that? Major pest control?

[See, this is why she gets along with you guys from the L4D world; she could relate to this place being the better world than where she was originally from.]

It really isn't so bad! Heheh -- from the looks of it, you're already doing better than most people, since you've got a gun.

But a lot of people have Darkness-proofed homes they take cover in, at night. The smart ones stay indoors then.

[ Zoey might agree, except that her group isn't here with her. Power of friendship, nakama, all that jazz. ]

Yeah, that is smart. So society just trudges on here? Able to set up businesses and all?

SERO and AGI runs a lot of the town. [She frowns a bit.] Unfortunately, they seem to be doing quite well.

I think all of the best business run in Darkness-proofed buildings as well. Hahaha -- there's an entire mall that's set up for that. Although I wouldn't trust that place either...there was a security breach a couple of weeks back.

Unfortunately? What you mean by that?

Neither company is any good. Hahaha...AGI is known to steal people for slavery and SERO likes to experiment on people.

What? But this place is in Canada, the cooler cousin of America. How does a company like those get away with that?

[ Man, this will definitely give Francis more reason to hate Canada. ]

[Sarina frowns; shaking her head as she laughed bitterly.] Because everyone's too afraid to stand up to them.

[ Still. Slavery in freaking Canada. What the hell. ]

Do you have to work for them?

[ Jesus, she has to get a job, but preferably not with those companies. Of course, Zoey has no idea just how powerful those companies are. ]

[She shook her head again.]

No, there's several unaffiliated businesses. Hahaha -- I work at a coffee shop by day, and at a cabaret bar at night. You just have to look around for those types of jobs more.

Oh, okay. Wow, it's weird coming back to civilization. I have to act grown-up now.

[ It's something Zoey wanted the most, after all.

So why isn't she feeling happy about it? ]

[Sarina smiled, sympathetically.]

It can be hard to adjust, I know. Hahaha -- I was a soldier before coming here. Even after being in this place for eight months, I still feel like there's so much I need to learn.
