You seem to assume there's such a thing as fate. There's always room to remould your situation, your life- "fate" is just an easy scapegoat for those too lazy or useless to try.

And, if despite all your efforts, you can't change that situation? Certainly, if you have enough strength, you can smash fate into little pieces. But, it still won't change the fact that it definitely exists.

Then, to put it frankly, somewhere along the lines you simply didn't work hard enough. And, well... where's the point in fate existing if it can be bypassed at all?

No matter how much they try, most humans can't alter the outcomes of their lives - so "fate" exists for them. There isn't a point to it.

Most "humans"? [He pauses, then makes a derisive little sound.] And I suppose you find it so much easier yourself, as a "witch"?

Yes. I don't have that particular shackle weighing me down.

Ohh? I can't imagine why. Though, some people don't need magic to do that anyway.

It isn't because of magic. If that was all someone needed to escape their fate, then any kid who's learned a couple of spells could do it.

Then you're just a particularly fortunate soul? The sole exception?

[In spite of himself, he sounds more curious than sneering.]

No. There are other witches like me. But, it seems none of them are here in this place.

Other witches, hmm? [That stirs some memory- Beatrice referred to an ability to use magic, didn't she? Then, who can say if it's the same thing, in a place like this?] Well, you're the first I've ever met. Welcome to the Port, by the way. It's Tonegawa. Tonegawa Yukio.

[ Beato being able to fight her fate is a good joke. ]

Thanks. Nice to meet you, Tonegawa.

[ honorifics? who needs them. ]

[what hdu everyone needs honorifics. Especially Tonegawa the entitled bastard. The irritation at the lack of respect comes through in his voice, just a little.]

I trust this place won't be too much of a culture shock for a witch such as yourself?

[ only old relics insist on honorifics. ]

No. An island that you can't escape from isn't something particularly new.

[He still sounds somewhat sharp when he answers- sharp, and mildly sarcastic.] Not to you, perhaps. You make it sound as if they simply spring up all over the place where you come from.

Were you completely startled by this one, then?
