[ Anyone who was at the barbecue would have noticed Yako (surprisingly) not indulging her usual appetite. Admittedly, that was more because she couldn't have a minute to sit down and actually have any food than because of any effort to exercise self-control. At best, she could wolf down a kebab or two while she was helping to cook the food and keep things coming.

Now that the lunch rush has mostly been taken care of, though, she's decided to sprawl onto a float, hands trailing in the water. She has a bucket filled with ice and popsicles balanced precariously on her stomach, and she's methodically making her way through it, tucking discarded wrappers neatly together. She's already pink from exposure to the sun, a tan line running along her shoulder where her bikini top's strap has slid slightly off to the side. The bikini's bright red (and ruffled to enhance her relatively modest assets) to match the clip she still has in her hair, though the latter is already a mess from the wind and salt water.

She doesn't expect to be disturbed, considering most people are either occupied eating, preparing for the talent show, or playing with their friends. For now, she has this moment all to herself, and a chance to breathe. So far, so good. She has a lot to worry about, but that's all in the future. ]

[Rochelle hadn't talked much to Yako recently but their little beach event had her interested. Besides, the weather was finally nice and it was a chance to go out and just enjoy the beach for the first time in a while.

She still had a pink bikini from last summer and thank god it still fit her fine. It wasn't hard to spot Yako, and soon enough she was swmming nearby her.]

Boo.

[ Yako's response is to crack an eye open and wave half-heartedly at Rochelle. All she wants to do is melt into a puddle on the float, though she knows that's not really possible. ]

Hey, stranger. [ She grins, wiggling her fingers at Rochelle. ] What brings you out here?

Hey, you.

[Rochelle grinned back and lightly took a hold of the float.]

Swimming. Figured I should check our your cool little party.

Hope you're enjoying it so far. [ Yako hefted the bucket up to offer its contents to Rochelle. ]

Oo' 'ant 'un? [ She grinned around the popsicle stuck in her mouth. ]

Ooh. [She reached over and took out a popsicle, clinging to the float a little firmer with the other hand this time.] Thanks.

Oo-what-now?

[ Yako swallowed. ] I said, "do you want one"-- but it looks like you figured that much out.

[ She fished another one out of its wrapper. ] It's a great day to be outside, huh? Can't believe I forgot it was Father's Day...

Oh--right.

[She laughed and got to unwrapping it--albeit a little awkwardly one handed, but she didn't and was off to eat it.]

Mmm--me too. The days go by REALLY fast on nice days. Even Father's Day.

Let's see... [ She bit into her popsicle thoughtfully, contemplating the ocean. ]

If I was home right now, I'd probably be dusting off dad's picture right now. And cooking, because my mom can't cook worth anything.

What about you?

Oh. Where's... your dad? [She blinked.]

If everything was normal? We'd--[Her expression turned a little bittersweet.] We'd probably be having a big dinner.

He died four years ago. [ She could say 'was murdered' to be more specific about it, but she sees little need to. People get awkward enough as it is. ] It feels like a really long time.

[ Moving on-- ] We used to do the same. Did you have a big family?

Oh. Shit. [She was quiet for a moment.] I'm sorry.

[And another pause--] I did.

It's all right. [ And a soft smile-- ]

That must have been nice, having a lot of people around. I don't have any siblings, and my parents were too busy to take me to see any of our extended family most of the time.

I assume this is all right? goesberserk June 20 2011, 06:49:58 UTC
[Shizuo hadn't really known what to think of the whole talent show thing, but it seems like he gets invited to most of Yako's events these days and he would have felt bad for not attending this one after how the last one went. It seemed that the bake sale had gone well except for that one incident, but it had been rather serious.

He's here mainly to check on her, he has to admit. And also because the weather is finally getting better and he wouldn't mind a swim.

He doesn't get there particularly early and wanders around for a time, trying some of the food but mainly keeping to himself. Dressed in some blue swimming trunks and a pattered button-up shirt, he's definitely fit for the beach.

But no Yako. It's only when he nears the water that he finally spots her, and after smiling to himself for a moment he calls out.] Hey! Yako! [He hopes she can hear him over the waves.]

It's perfect! :D topslug June 20 2011, 07:37:01 UTC
[ There's a lot to weigh on Yako's mind these days. Poisoned cookies. Little girls ambushed in offices. It would almost be depressing, if she let herself dwell on it. Her appetite isn't up to what it used to be, since getting poisoned; as much as she wants to eat, she knows her stomach will only rebel. The sea rocks the float gently (anchored in the sand so it doesn't drift away) and for a moment Yako feels weightless, adrift. When she shuts her eyes, she can almost pretend she's anywhere but here.

She hears her name being called in the distance. The voice isn't immediately familiar, but when she opens her eyes, she spots Shizuo instantly. ]

Heiwajima-san! [ She sits up straight and waves at him. The float's not far from the shore-- the water's only about waist-deep for someone of Shizuo's height. Glancing right and left, Yako's caught in the dilemma of either slipping off the float to join him on the shore or waiting to see if he'll join her in the water. Either way, his company is obviously welcome. ]

[For a moment he feels bad for interrupting her when she was clearly off in her own world, but her reaction seems enthused enough that he tosses those worries away. Shizuo doesn't want her to inconvenience herself by having to get off of that float she's on, and he did come here to swim.

He pulls off the shirt he's wearing and then sets it down in the sand, placing a small rock over it to make sure that the wind doesn't blow it away. Once that's done he starts to wade into the water and then swims his way over to her once it's deep enough.

Once he reaches the float Shizuo stands again and runs his hands through his hair, enjoying the water. It's a bit cold still, but he's already getting used to it. Oh, and it might stand out that he's still got his sunglasses on. He's managed to keep his head above water for the most part.]
