Breakfast started at 8 o'clock:
After the silent auction closed, we auctioned some additional artwork and a collection of seventeen faery books.
We surveyed attendees a little bit about which of the various news outlets they follow and use, about whether there is sufficient interest for us to explore adding a fantasy-dedicated extra-day(s) writing workshop, and about whether there is interest in reading and reviewing fantasy books for other attendees.
And then we spoke a bit about 2011, which will remain in Vail and tackle monsters and the monstrous. We chatted about the discussions we'd had regarding our 2011 logo, about the inspirations for the theme, and why it's important. We mentioned questions about women as monsters, about what it means to be monstrous, and what happens when you think you're the monster.
Rather than simply announce the guests of honor for 2011, we showed a short PowerPoint presentation filled with hints and clues to their identities. Before the end of the PowerPoint, attendees put together their ideas about the older or forthcoming titles, closeups of book covers, and silly rhymes to identify Justine Larbalestier, Nnedi Okorafor, and Laini Taylor. Look for website updates on or about November 1, 2010.
It felt like we were just getting started, and that we had so much more to talk about, but the airport shuttle was ready for us.
And while we'd been talking about fantasy and women, faeries and friendship, it had been snowing in the higher elevations, leaving us with this one last look.
Thank you again to guests of honor Holly Black, Marie Brennan, and Terri Windling; to all of our presenters; to everyone who volunteered; and to each and every attendee for spending an entire weekend sharing so many thoughtful perspectives. We hope we'll see you again next year.
