Friday at Sirens

Oct 08, 2010 22:24

Friday morning started with Books and Breakfast: we discussed Bones of Faerie, The Perilous Gard, Thomas the Rhymer, War for the Oaks, and Wildwood Dancing.

Readers trickling in to discuss books over breakfast.

The freebie table.

The Bookworm of Edwards' raffle.

Janni Lee Simner and Mallory Loehr shop at The Bookworm of Edwards.

Specially signed books and art in the silent auction.

And then programming started in earnest. We got pictures and notes from a few presentations, and we'll open up a post for summaries, pictures, and reports soon. Here are a couple of presentations that we got pictures of!

Christina Blake presenting on biology in young adult fantasy.

Ellen Kushner talking about Thomas the Rhymer.

Delia Sherman, Holly Black, Marie Brennan, Shveta Thakrar,
Terri Windling, and Ellen Kushner presenting "Fairies Come to Our Town."

Shveta Thakrar, Cindy Pon, Andrea Horbinski, and Valerie Frankel
presenting on faeries and folklore from around the world. (We wiggled; they didn't.)

Malinda Lo getting ready for "Queerness and Fairy Tales."

Kayla Hill presenting "Tough Chick: Portrayals of Women's
Strength and Sexuality in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance."

Faye Bi talking about fantasy book cover design.

At lunch, guest of honor Marie Brennan talked about developing a faery history, role-playing inspirations, problems in drawing directly from history and historical documents, the framing of matriarchal societies as exotic, gender relations in traditional feery stories, carefully considering the origins and functions of magical beings, and more.

In the afternoon, we broke for tea, chatter, and book signings.

Tiffany Aching makes an appearance.

After the dinner break, during which time we experienced some rain, snow, and hail, we gathered for cocoa and evening programs.

Cocoa to warm everyone up.

Terri Windling talks about home, Marie Brennan reads from With Fate Conspire, and Holly Black reads from The White Cat and The Red Glove.

Manda Lewis demonstrates how to make your own faery wings, and attendees give it a try.
