so i just wanted to tell everyone this story. not sure why.
last year LaurenK came home with me at the beggining of winter break for a few days since she was leaving ithaca for good and wanted to go to the city. so we went down on a saturday morning on a train leaving from beacon and getting into grand central. we listened to bright eyes so whole way down and watched the river pass by. the first thing we did was go to a cathedral where she wanted to light a candle for a friend. i remember i got an overpriced lamb gyro. but well worth it. somewhere during the day we ended up finding conor obersts house in mid-town i believe. he lived above a laundrymat in a bad part of town which made total sense to LaurenK. i think it was sometime before that when we went into strand books where i picked up a picture book on flophouses and fell into a fascination with the art of war by sun tzu. we also peed exclusively at starbucks and as a result i had a few cups of chantico. the greatest thing though was when we were looking for someplace to eat. we were having a bit of trouble picking someplace out. but we knew that we would know where it was as soon as we saw it. we eventually found the square diner somewhere between chelsea and soho. we went in and it was tiny and the food was diner food. but we knew we were supposed to be there. possibly the greatest meal of my life. as soon as we sat down we started listen to the people in the booth behind us. they were three foreign, sounded russian, college age guys having an intellectual conversation ranging from creationism to foreign policies to the nature of time and space. we sat there and hardly said a word and just listened. it was amazing.
