Some TV Shows Since Last I was here

May 27, 2022 13:03

Okay so I haven't been around a lot. But during that time I've had access to a lot of shows I've watched here or there. In particular last summer was about 116 degrees every day and since we do not have air conditioning I spent most of my summer days out. And because a lot of places were closed still I would end up at my office with nothing to do but watch tv. So here are some shows I watched and loved:

Bridgerton
Where to find it: Netflix
Based loosely on a book series: This was kind of popular so chances are you've seen it but it was very hot and steamy but also just brilliant. The voice over was great and didn't detract from the overal show. It was well worth it and now has 2 seasons. I loved the reimagining of it and pretty much every character was spectacular. Regency with instrumental pop songs and chemistry you wouldn't believe.

Chesapeake Shores
Where to find it: Hallmark
I know a Hallmark show. Well, Hallmark's shows are much better than their movies even though I don't mind those either. This one is really good and about a family and the ups and downs of said family. I was disappointed one of the main characters left for this most recent season but he left because the writers gave him nothing which was true. The show hasn't suffered because mostly the family members are my favorite with the exception of the 1 brother who annoys me to know end. Still great watch.

Dead to Me
Where to find it: Netflix
Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are beyond hilarious in this very dark comedy about the death of CA's husband but by the time season 2 comes around it is about so much more than 1 murder. It is fantastic and mind boggling and worth every crazy minute.

Derry Girls
Where to find it: Netflix
Set in Ireland in the 90s admist "the trouble" it is about high schoolers who go to an all girls Catholic school and their lives with their family. Also one of the Derry Girls is a boy. It is hilarious and sometimes dark but so worth it. The third season is airing in the UK so hopefully it will be hitting Netflix soon. Can't wait. This is and easy watch because the episodes are about 30 minutes or so.

For All Mankind
Where to find it: AppleTV
Rather interesting retelling of the Space Race if the Russians had beat us to the Moon. The first season was good but slow but the second really picked up and was really good. If you know the history you'll see some events play out how they did in reality but some things are skipped over because the alternate timeline changes history.

Foundation
Where to find it: AppleTV
Based on the book by Isaac Asimov. he premise of the stories is that, in the waning days of a future Galactic Empire, the mathematician Hari Seldon spends his life developing a theory of psychohistory, a new and effective mathematical sociology. Using statistical laws of mass action, it can predict the future of large populations. Seldon foresees the imminent fall of the Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way, and a Dark Age lasting 30,000 years before a second empire arises. Although the momentum of the Empire's fall is too great to stop, Seldon devises a plan by which "the onrushing mass of events must be deflected just a little" to eventually limit this interregnum to just one thousand years. To implement his plan, Seldon creates the Foundations-two groups of scientists and engineers settled at opposite ends of the galaxy-to preserve the spirit of science and civilization, and thus become the cornerstones of the new galactic empire.

It was really compelling. I really enjoyed it even if there were times I didn't understand what was happening. I'm hoping it continues because I'll defintely watch it again for more.

Harrow
Where to find it: Hulu
Crime show. I know there are crime show buffs out there. It has the same structure as most. Pathologist who solves crime but there is something about this show. Takes place in Australia and is more edgy than our typical crime shows. And you never know what Harrow will do.

Home Before Dark
Where to find it: AppleTV
One of my favs! Young investigative journalist Hilde Lisko moves with her family to the small town her father left behind, only to unearth shocking secrets in her pursuit of the truth.

Hilde is an investigative journalist at heart and she's good at it. She's just a kid and she unearths some shocking mysterys that really are worth the watch. I binged this so fast because I just had to keep going.

Invasion
Where to find it: AppleTV
About the invasion of aliens who are hell bent on killing humans. It was so good. It was a total thrill. I remember watching it quickly because I just couldn't get enough.

Lock & Key
Where to find it: Netflix
Great dark fantasy series based on a horror comic book series. I prefer the show. I read the comics after watching the show but yeah I like the shows vibe better. It is really good and sometimes rather dark but excellent overall. The premise is this family moves to their father's childhood home after his death. There they find magical keys that open a whole world of crazy things and the evil that wants access to it all. Really worth it. Can't remember if there is 2 or 3 seasons but with the last season coming out I watched everything over because I loved it.

Lost in Space
Where to find it: Netflix
You probably know this story from the movie in the 90s or early 00s. It is nothing like that. It is the Robinson family being Lost in Space but it is more about colonizing a planet after ruining earth which is a story that typically bugs the shit out of me but they don't dwell on it but instead move on to the adventures and obstacles they have to overcome to get to the colony after the colony ship is attacked and all the family ships are scattered. Three season only and it is fantastic.

The Marvelous Ms. Maisel
Where to find it: AmazonPrime
You've probably heard of this. Ms Maisel is a comedian in the early part of the 20th century when woman didn't really do that sort of things. It is based on Joan Rivers life - loosely. It can be very funny and sometimes annoying but it is enjoyable enough that I would recommend it. Has several season but is a fairly quick watch.

Only Murders in the Building
Where to find it: Hulu
Completely hilarious! The gist is these three (see image) live in an upscale apartment building where a death takes place. They are positive it is a murder and decide to investigate and create a podcast. It has Martin Short and Steve Martin so how can it be anything but hilarious. Two seasons and well worth it.

Resident Alien
Where to find it: Peacock
Alan Tuduk is an alien come to earth intent on destroying earth. He kills a local doctor and takes his identity but doesn't blend in well and there is a kid who can see through his disguise. So said alien is running around trying to make people believe the kids is crazy while pretending to the be local doctor and trying to find stuff from his ship that will destroy earth. Yeah, it's nuts and funny and heartwarming and such a good ride. Watch it.

Severance
Where to find it: AppleTV
Trippy as hell. Severance is the process of separating your work life from you life. You go to work and there you can't remember your real life outside of work and when you are not at work you can't remember work. The idea is to take away your worries but the truth is something sinister is going on. The Severance crew is rebelling by trying to figure out what is going on and what the company is hiding. Crazy story but so worth it. Can't wait for the next season.

Shadow & Bone
Where to find it: Netflix
Based on books by the same name. Fantasy about people with the ability to control elements and the world around them. Reminded me of Avatar in that regard but it is more choosen one and sinister bad guy type thing. Has a feel of Narnia and Hunger Games but more magical. I was totally hooked by Alina and Kirigan. I felt a little lost when the season ended and kind of wished I'd discovered it when the second season was dropped because I'm dying to know more.

Sweet Magnolias
Where to find it: Netflix
A guilty pleasure woman centric show. Small southern town. Southern bells and friendship. Three woman overcome the obstacles in their life whether it is family issues, men or just business. They rise above with grace and love and most of all each other. It was just something I turned to after Virgin River ended and I needed something small town again. Not a disappointment at all.

Ted Lasson
Where to find it: AppleTV
OMG this made my face and sides hurt. I think it is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. It is about soccer players and a football coach from America that comes to be their coach. It is hilarious and over the top good and something I could watch a million times over. Ted Lasso is quotable and loveable and ROY KENT! Watch it and find out what that means.

The After Party
Where to find it: AppleTV
A comedy murder mystery with Tiffany Haddish. What more do you need to know? Okay it is about a highschool reunion after party that goes really wrong with the host dies and everyone at the party is a murder suspect. Each character tells their story and each episode is a different genre of a tale and it is so hilarious and fantastic. Totally worth the watch.

The Cleaning Lady
Where to find it: Hulu
I watched this when it was airing which was maddening because I constantly wanted to watch the next episode. Thony and Arman are so hot on screen together and while I'm not okay with cheaters on my shows... I wanted them to cheat. I wanted them together.

Okay so it is about a Doctor from Cambodia who brought her son to the US for a transplant. She's having trouble getting him medical attention and works nights as a cleaning lady at a casino and then an illegal fight club. She witnesses a murder by the Armenian mafia but makes a deal to be their cleaner. She gets swept up into a risky life where all she wants is to help her son but that changes as Arman steps up to help her get the medical attention she needs for her kid. And then in comes the FBI.

Well worth it.

The Witcher
Where to find it: Netflix
The story begins with Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Ciri of Cintra, and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg at different points of time, exploring formative events that shape their characters throughout first season, before eventually merging into a single timeline. Geralt and Ciri are linked by destiny since before she was born when he unknowingly demanded her as a reward for his services by invoking "the Law of Surprise". After the two finally meet, Geralt becomes the princess's protector and must help her and fight against her various pursuers to prevent her Elder Blood and powerful magic from being used for malevolent purposes and keep Ciri and their world safe.

I knew nothing about this book series when I started it. Watched it because my love Henry Cavill was in it. And dang does he make white hair and black eyes hot. It is a wonderful fantasy story about love and destiny which I'm considering watching all over again.

Truth Be Told
Where to find it: AppleTV
True crime podcaster Poppy Parnell is called to investigate the case of convicted killer Warren Cave, a man she painted as the murderer of the father of identical twin daughters Josie and Lanie. Soon, Parnell must decide where the lines between guilt and innocence lie when Cave claims that he was framed for the crime. And that is just the first season. Each season goes over a different true crime type thing so far. Octavia Spencer is fantastic and the show is so compelling. One of the best mystery shows available.

Wheel of Time
Where to find it: AmazonPrime
The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine, a member of the Aes Sedai, a powerful organization of women who can channel the One Power. With her Warder, Lan, she seeks a group of five young villagers from the secluded Two Rivers, believing one of them is the reincarnation of the Dragon, an extremely powerful channeller who broke the world. The Dragon Reborn is prophesied to either save the world from a primordial evil known as the Dark One, or break it once more.

I heard from book fans that this is a terrible show which is nothing like the books and not worth watching. I have never read the books and so I thoroughly enjoyed the show and would not only watch it again but truly hope it continues so I can rewatch for the coming season.

Well crap that is a lot of shows. But they are good selection for you to go through if your interested. I think my have to watch show here is going to be Ted Lasso for comedy definitely. For fantasy I'd say the best is Lock & Key is probably the best. For a crime show it is definitely Home Before Dark. I hope if you watch any of these you enjoy them.

And yes, I have access to a lot of streaming services. Access is the key word there.
