Out of 250 Jewish-Christian writings, sixty-six have arbitrarily been declared canonical by Protestants. The rejected books are of the same general character as those now published together as the "Holy Bible." Circumstances rather than merit determined selection.
For 150 years the Christian Bible consisted of the sacred books of the Jews. The New Testament was not formed until the latter half of the second century when Irenaeus selected twenty books from among forty or more gospels, nearly as many acts of apostles, a score of revelations and a hundred epistles. Why were these particular books chosen? Why four gospels instead of one? Irenaeus: "There are four quarters of the earth in which we live and four universal winds." The gospels were unknown to Peter, Paul, and the early church fathers. They were forged later.
The Bible did not assume anything like its present form until the fourth century. The Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, and Protestant canons were not adopted until modern times. The Bible was recognized as a collection of independent writings. The Council of Trent (1563) determined the Roman Catholic, Protestants denounce the Catholic Bible as a "popish imposture." The Greek Catholics at the Council of Jerusalem in 1672 finally accepted the book of Revelation. Their Bible contains several books not in the Roman canon. The Westminster Assembly in 1647 approved the list of sixty-six books composing the authorized version, the one most used in America. Our Bible, therefore, is less than 300 years old.
The Bible story of Jesus is a contradictory and confusing account. The Bible shows that this Jesus fellow spoke and taught many absurd and foolish things, and often believed he was having a conversation with devils. If one will read the entire Bible, one will find tales of ignorance, murder, sexual perversions, mass insanity, idiotic laws, and even cannibalism and human sacrifice. It staggers the imagination how anyone in his right mind could read the Bible and believe that it was written by a wise, just, and loving god. Christians have found biblical scriptures telling them to burn people at the stake, to justify slavery, to oppress and persecute others, and to kill and commit war in the name of their god. Unfortunately, there are some even today who would have us return to the teachings and laws found in the Bible.
well, enough for now, it just saddens me to know, that most christians believe because they'v been told to believe, not to question their so called faith, most dont even know whats really in the bible, or they selectively dismiss what the bible says just to suit what they want. it doesnt work that way, as a lot of christians have have yelled at me, your either on the road to righteousness, or your going to hell. i say ive got my own tools, and im plowing my own highway of life, next exit...my bed.

Wow...how did all this turn into a bunch of stuff about church and religion? I didn't read anything in the original entry about church or even anything to do with church! I don't know exactly where I stand on the subject, but I found it amazing to read your rants on Christianity and Churches. You both are very well versed on your same-sided debate and I have to give you props for that.

"The 'truth' according to dedfiend" is a perversion of the truth.

You cannot base your hatred and rejection of Christ on what the catholic church does. That does not represent all of Christianity. And that does not mean that catholics are evil. Also, if you have a corrupt organization run by people, that in no way proves that Jesus himself did not exist; in fact, it actually supports Jesus teachings on why people need God in the first place. The papacy and the vatican are never mentioned in the Bible, nor does the Bible claim that Peter was a Pope. It also doesn't say that he was in charge of circumcision. These supposed "facts" you are quoting are from human sources who are just as fallible as the ones you are ranting and raving against.

On your LJ page, you question how God can let certain cultures not have the "whole" Bible, yet Christ was preached to their ancestors. The fault of Jesus not being taught to these people falls on their parents, not God. You also question the choosing of the acceptable books of the Bible. Fighting occured over which letters to include, yet the four Gospels and the Pentateuch from the OT remained, which have all one really needs to know for salvation. Further, you try to gloss over Josephus mentioning Jesus by saying it is all a forgery. There is no question that Josephus mentions Jesus, the only part that is thought to be an "addition" is where it says "he is the Messiah" and "if indeed he can be called a man." The reference to Jesus' existence is evidenced in all languages that maintain Josephus' work, including several copies in Arabic and Greek. Also, your references to Jesus contradicting himself show a poor understanding of the original Greek New Testament, as these contradictions go away when you understand the context.

I won't bore other readers by going on; I'll just leave my comment on "dedfiend's" denial of Christ and the Bible with one more thought. Jesus says, "...a tree is recognized by its fruit." Do you question because you don't want to believe, or because your life has not bourne good fruit? God will hold you accountable for subverting his word and trying to turn others away from faith in Him.
