Gareth knows he should have known better than to try to talk to Gaheris. It has only served to frustrate him, which he knows isn't fair-- knowledge which frustrates him still further. So, not too long after leaving Gaheris in the woods, Gareth can be found sitting in the woods himself, somewhere between his brothers' cottage (where he knows he does not want to be) and the Mansion (where experience shows he really oughtn't go).
