Gareth is being Good. Well, he's trying to be good at least, because he's something to ask Mordred, and if he's learned anything from being a youngest brother, it's that getting yelled at is not the first step on the road to getting what you want. So he's being still and quiet and all the things he's been told to be, just in case his brother comes

Which he does, presently, with soup and tea and fresh muffins. "Oi, you. Wake up."

"I'm awake!"

"Feeding time at the zoo." He sets the tray down, and sits on the edge of the bed. "How are we today?"

[sirbeaumains]

He makes a face, like the good, mature brother that he is. "Fine. How're you?"

"Is that fine as in 'fine', or fine as in 'go away, Mordred'?"

[sirbeaumains]

"No, don't go! I-- I wanted to ask you something."

[illgotten]

He raises his eyebrows. "The answer is When Clar says you can."

[sirbeaumains]

"Not that."

[illgotten]

Mordred grins. "All right, what?"

[sirbeaumains]

"Well, so." He hesitates a moment, then plunges in, everything coming out in a great rush. "When I was talking to Clar and then to Gaheris, they said something funny, but I didn't really think about it 'till later, when I was talking to my lady Cimorene, and she said I should ask you, because it's about everybody remembering different things and she said that you remembered. So-- so I thought I'd ask."

His face goes quiet and cold. "What do you want to know, exactly?"

[sirbeaumains]

"I don't know. That's the trouble. I think there's something, but I don't know."

[illgotten]

"It'll come to you eventually, I'm sure," bitterly.

[sirbeaumains]

Oops. "--oh. Um, nevermind, then."

[illgotten]

Mordred holds his gaze a moment later. "As it happens, I promised Gaheris that I wouldn't tell you." Then he stands. "Eat your soup. It tastes lousy cold."

"You don't have to go," he says meekly.
