Follow up to the last entry
Okay, so there’s another new e-mail forward that’s being discussed on Snopes, same vein as the last one I ranted about. This one’s at http://www.snopes.com/katrina/personal/reststop.asp.
At least this time, the person is wearing their bigotry out in the open where everyone can see it. They took the time to add the line, “Why are all these fat blacks laying around on cots sleeping while white people are lining up by the thousands to SERVE THEM MEALS???” The emphasis is in the original. I have to wonder about where this person grew up that the idea of white people serving meals to black people offends them so. I’m sure some people would tell me that the author is really just complaining about people being lazy while other people serve them, but come on. They added the racial indicators because they think that increases the inappropriateness of what they’re describing.
It’s taking all of my will not to make disparaging generalizations about White Southerners right now. I keep having to remind myself of how many are giving so much of themselves to the evacuees in need without complaint or patronization. Gotta keep my own prejudices or potential prejudices in check.
