The plothole's disappearance confuses Palomides--on the one hand, it means the house is less magical, and therefore more likely to be un-cursed. On the other hand, it means that he cannot eat like a Roman at a feast whenever he likes, and he certainly does not have his nasty black coffee any longer.
Therefore, he is undertaking a study of the surrounding forests. He has brought home sticks, bits of bark, leaves, and berries; he is putting them in a little plastic box with compartments, giving them names so that he will be able to think about them. He hopes to determine whether they are poisonous without danger to himself or others, but he has not thought of how he could yet.
