Please Don't Judge Me...

Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to discuss something that is near and dear to my heart. Something that not many people understand for what it is. Some may call me gay, a pussy, or even not manly enough to be a White Sox fan. But I feel that I must come out and say it. I'm a fan of romantic comedies. There, I said it. Now some may be saying to themselves, "How can McGee like chick flicks??" It is at this point that I must stress that difference between chick flicks and romantic comedies. While I do admit that some romantic comedies may cross the border into the realm of chick flicks, not all chick flicks are romantic comedies. This is a divide that I have not quite gotten a solid grasp of, but I stand by the fact that I think there is a difference between the two. I think in order for a movie to be considered a romantic comedy is that people, men or women, must be able to describe it as "funny" before, or even in the same breath, as "cute." Some movies that I believe fall into this category are "A Lot Like Love," "Serendipity," and "Hitch." While some may argue about the amount of comedy in some of these movies, it's really there. Believe me. Or if you don't, go out and see them.
I think the reason that I like these movies so much are because of the characters. Not only are there the stunningly beautiful leading ladies, but the main male character is someone that I sometimes wish I could be. Characters like Dermot Mulroney in "The Wedding Date," Matthew McConaughey in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," or Hugh Grant in any of the many movies that he has starred in just ooze style, confidence, and coolness. They're suave, funny, smart, and always get the girl. How can a teenage guy not want to be one of these characters? Granted I will never be in New York and meet Kate Beckinsale, but I could only hope that maybe someday when I meet a great girl that I'd know exactly what to say like John Cusack in "Serendipity." I think it's holding out for a situation like that that keeps bringing me back to the genre. I know this whole post is ridiculous and stupid, but it feels much better now that everything's off my chest.
