I read an article on espn.com today that made me think. And those of you who're thinking, "Jesus, another sports entry," don't worry, it's not. What it said was that people who don't try their best are afraid of failure. It seems sort of counter-intuitive at first, but think allow me to elaborate. When we really work hard on something, be it school, a sport, a relationship, anything really, we expect to excel at it. We work our asses off on papers and when we finish we think we'll get an A. We train for months in preparation for a big game or meet and expect to win. We try harder than anything perhaps at relationships and expect them to stay stronger than ever. And when we try our hardest and fail, it's devastating. Our best wasn't good enough. For whatever reason, despite putting more effort than one could imagine, we did not come out ahead.
That's why we don't try our hardest. Because when we try our hardest and fail, there is no consolation. We cannot think back and say to yourself, "Damn, I should have tried harder writing/training/loving," because you couldn't have tried any harder. Are we really scared of failure that much that we don't try as hard as we can? Now when I say "we" I mean more society in general I suppose. But society sounds just dumb, so I'll say I'm referring to myself because I know that I don't try as hard as I could or should in many aspects of life. Is it something that's subconscious that makes me scared of failure? I know I'm scared to fail but I'm not sure if that's why I don't put 100% of myself into everything. What do the like 2.3 people that read this think?
