I know I haven't posted much here lately. I've been busy.
If I were a character in the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, I guess I would be the tortoise.
I finally earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in May. I have attended at least three institutions of higher learning in order to do it. It just took a while because, well, shit just kept happening.
5 semesters as a Biology major at SUNY New Paltz, back in the '70's.
3.5 years as an illustration and advertising major at the Academy of Art University at San Francisco in the '80's. (they promised me there'd be no math!)
I transferred as many credits as I could and took a rare opportunity for a career change and went to Pace University for the past 2 years as a Psychology major. Specializing in Applied Psychology and Human Relations.
Not too bad for the most part, but having to retake 2 semesters of college algebra as a core requirement, after not having to do anything more than balancing a checkbook in over 35 years nearly did me in. No, really. It nearly did me in.
With the help of an amazing support structure, (
njlexi on the home front and
flaggestate's doomedgirl as my inside person in the school's administration) I graduated with honors. Magna Cum Louder, baby! Louder! I still can't hear you!
Currently, I'm working at the place that I interned at for the past year. I work with substance abuse populations who are mentally ill and in many cases, formerly incarcerated. But it's only for part of the summer and then I'm hitting the pavement looking for work again.
I'm gearing to get NYS certified as a substance abuse counselor and investigating the feasibility of grad school for social work.
