Hardware: Reverse Multithreading CPUs

microbee writes "The register is reporting that AMD is researching a new CPU technology called 'reverse multithreading', which essentially does the opposite of hyperthreading in that it presents multiple cores to the OS as a single-core processor." From the article: "The technology is aimed at the next architecture after K8, according to a purported company mole cited by French-language site x86 Secret. It's well known that two CPUs - whether two separate processors or two cores on the same die - don't generate, clock for clock, double the performance of a single CPU. However, by making the CPU once again appear as a single logical processor, AMD is claimed to believe it may be able to double the single-chip performance with a two-core chip or provide quadruple the performance with a quad-core processor."

First HD-DVD Disc Reviews - Mixed Marks

An anonymous reader writes "As the first HD-DVD players and discs hit store shelves nationwide today, the new site High-Def DVD Digest has posted extraordinarily detailed reviews of the HD-DVD disc releases of 'Serenity' and 'The Last Samurai,' with more reviews to come later today. The site gives both discs mixed marks, with the Tom Cruise flick edging out the Whedon-fest for demonstrating more pure high-def eye-candy appeal. Also worth a look-see: a detailed account of their 'review reference system' (ie: their gear)."

1) Awesome news on AMD looking at reverse hyperthreading. This would make the dual-processor (or more!) capabilities actually useable, seeing as currently, programs (and games...) are only designed to run on a single processor, leaving the second processor virtually unused. Doing this theorized process would completely eliminate the responsibility of programmers to make their applications and games use both CPUs, and just let everything continue the way it is right now... except, with a nice performance boost. Definitely looking forward to this.

2) HD-DVD. Personally, from what I can see, I like Blu-Ray technology better... and it's awful that we can't decide on one frigging format. Multiple formats is the most inefficient way of going about things EVER. Srsly. Though, I am quite enthused about these new storage mediums, in general... as an effect of these high-definition discs coming out, I can only assume more people will buy high definition TV's... and then, I'd assume the overall price would come down. Perhaps my logic's flawed, but that would at least be ideal.

It's not uncommon to be able to buy writable CDs for 25 cents a piece when buying them in bulk. In a few years, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's will be the same. It's wonderful.

As for my day, went to calc and bio reviews... oh my. Although, I do find the immune system interesting... potentially immunology is a way to go for me. But, holy fuck, everyone does that. Gayyyyyyy.

Drove Willem, Justin, and Ainsley home. We had Pizza Hut on the way. Greaaaaaaaasy as hell. But it was pretty damn good.

Back to studying. I hope.

Edit: Btw, good article about how video gaming is considered childish and a waste of time, whereas sitting in front of a TV for hours is not.
