I couldn't quite figure out how I got onto this Western kick. Maybe I know now or maybe I just shuffle my interests around periodically.
I have an inkling, though. I had been interested in local history because I was thinking of doing Unknown Armies. From there it's a pretty short hop to get into American legends, myths, and history - and a whole lot of them come out of the West. Now combine that with just a bit of nostalgia for seeing the western half of the country while I'm in the mood for some new stuff and you have a recipe for a full-fledged shake-up.
I haven't gone cool on post-apocalyptic or Cthulhu or crazy transhumanist future, but this feels a little more bite-sized right now. It's got the bonus that (to me) it ties in with a whole lot of music that I'm not very familiar with. And I do feel like really shaking up my music playlists; I've got a bit tired of the same anime/fantasy and horror soundtrack type material that I'd been working with. I'd also liked some of the folk-type music and some of the more classic country Western stuff so why not?
I also found an unexpected bonanza (ha) of really interesting travel and place memoirs in the used book sale at the library when looking for a travel book for our friends.
After doing Pirates! I wanted to try something with a much more focused scope - a town, a family, a circus. I'd also like to try some different mechanics - Savage Worlds seems pretty cool now that I have got over my exceptionally weird aversion to the word "bennies." (I wish I was making this up.) There's also Fiasco, Law's Out, and Dogs in the Vineyard. Maybe Dreadful Secrets of Candlewick Manor once Pat and Jen get back.
I will perhaps get Vendetta Run ready if we need another game for next month's birthdaycon. I feel pretty fried so I'm not going to be diving into anything I don't kind of understand (Gumshoe) or that prides itself on simplicity (Savage Worlds, FATE,, Feng Shui).
