Sick day

Apr 10, 2014 17:26

I am not so good at sitting back and trying to recover. Today I did taxes and still went to class, though I didn't do any labwork. I did some tidying and dishes, too. But the taxes were the main thing. I had really been worrying about them, but it didn't seem to be as bad as I thought.

Lately most of my entries have been private entries - not because my doings have been especially private, but because I haven't been able to tie the ramblings into something that even I consider a coherent entry. So they stay half-finished and private, waiting for the day when I'll figure out the thread that runs through them.

In any case, I've been having the bug to start new projects. New games! New books! New campaigns! New household projects!

It is great to have the enthusiasm, but I have to tamp down on it a little. Because there's only so much you can do, and because for me there's more joy in progressing in a thing - even finishing it - than simply starting it. Having too many half (or less) finished projects really does wear on me, especially when I feel like I'm not making progress on them.

It actually took some focused introspection to really figure that out and make it stick, though. Because to start new things you (often) have to buy them, and I'd thought buying new things made me happy. It didn't, really, but it was distracting. So that was part of the reason that I realized last year that my thinking had become wrong. Not just wrong in the sense of "you are spending money in a bad way*" - but in the sense of "you no longer understand yourself because of these distractions."

* though I was.

So I don't think I have finished examining and changing my wrong thinking. But I know it's there, and it gives me pause when I want to drop everything and start something new, or buy something new. Especially since I am most prone to do that when I am so tired and stressed and when I could really use the comforts of something familiar.

But it's always a balance of old and new. If you exclusively dive into old things and eschew the new, then you will get tired of your nostalgic things.

I have been tending a bit more towards the old lately - lots of Xenogears music and watching some Gurenn Lagan and so forth. But there's been some new stuff too, like starting on Breaking Bad or checking out new movies and games. Harvey shared a game with us called Takenoko about feeding a panda bear that was both fun and cute. A little random, so a bit more casual, but still enjoyable in my opinion.

Final tally:

Work type stuff:
- Taxes
- Fridge cleaning
- Cooking
- going to class
- Dishes/cleaning up after cooking

Fun stuff:
- Gurenn Lagann
- Persona 3
- Breaking Bad
