like a boss.

(Spoilers: I do not feel like a boss).

Update on Bruce: they got the catheter in and he is doing well this morning. At least as well as a cat with an IV tube in and a pee tube out can be said to be doing. He ate some food but is most likely going to have to stay for another night.

A little stressful, as you might guess..

Last night when I was worrying, I went through some livejournal stuff from last year. The cycles that I go through are uncannily similar from one year to the next. Some of the entries, in fact, even have the same titles. July tends to be a slightly frantic month for me, where I focus on finding some new inspiration or new project but actually finish some of the books that I've started within the last year.

(Last year I also started keeping track of what food I was eating because - just like this year - the junk food consumption had got a bit of control in July.)

Right now I've been working through some of the short story collections that Sarah got me a couple years ago. They're pretty excellent. Some of the horror stories in particular realize that often the key to tension is not in gore, but in making you wait for the next beat, or for the final shoe to drop. And then - they deny you that, either through an ambiguous conclusion or through a twist. Like the Japanese, I think summer is a great time for ghost stories..

I've been reading some of China Mieville's Kraken as well. It's good. It's intense, too. Kind of like Neverwhere, but with a more raw edge. It's surprising how much of the book is told through dialogue - it's quite a bit of it, so far.

The amount of music I've been bookmarking on spotify and youtube has been crazy lately. So many potential moods and motifs. I was wondering if my tastes were becoming indiscriminate, but then I'll come across something I don't care for. (Example: the metal-influenced soundtrack to Metal Gear Revengance. It probably works in the game, but not for me and definitely not for my games, which is a big part of why I like listening to these soundtracks. That and I do really like music, but in some ways the lyrics in pop music distract me from the rest of the song. (If that makes any sense at all.)

Other than the new releases from Atra Aeterna and Disparition, I think I am good for music for a while with this backlog I have created.

I do kind of think my keg set-up is cursed. I didn't even touch it yesterday - I was planning to, but ended up keeping an eye on Bruce basically all day. And of course, the previous incidents involving broken controllers, leaking beer, moldy fridges, and basically everything else that could go wrong with that kind of set-up.

Well. Rest of the week should be good at least.. Team Rocket chargen (at last, holy shit) and Pat coming to visit this weekend, so most likely a Pirates! game.

music, stress, books, cats
