The books
- The Magician King
- The Hunger Games
- Johannes Cabal, Necromancer
- Johannes Cabal, Detective,
- Johannes Cabal and the Fear Institute
- Snow Crash
- Zodiac
- Enterprise of Death
- Ravenloft: King of the Dead
- Dead Man's Boots
- Oryx and Crake
- Alloy of Law
- I Shall Wear Midnight
Total: 13. About one a month, though that wasn't how the reading pattern actually went. And fully half involve death or necromancers right in the title.
Thoughts:
The majority of these were finished on planes or car trips. I probably wouldn't have finished Zodiac without the plane ride. Hrmm. I read about half of them basically straight through (in a week or less) and the other half were things I started, mulled over, and eventually finished several months later.
Enterprise of Death was probably the surprise of the year for me. Oryx and Crake was also completely off my radar until Jill recommended it and it blew me away. Powerful stuff in both of them.
Snow Crash and Johannes Cabal were both really good, but are exactly, precisely the sort of thing I like so it wasn't a huge surprise.
Not as much traditional fantasy this time around. So it goes.
Graphic novels:
Hellboy, Mouse Guard
RPGs:
I mostly got excited about Apocalypse World this last year, but I also looked at some of its offshoots and paged through DFRPG.
Started but did not finish.. at least so far:
- Double Dead
- Tome of the Undergates
- Red Country (yet)
- Shogun
- 1Q84
- Damnation Alley
- Canticle for Leibowitz
- Declare
Notably, I seem to decide post-apocalyptic books are too depressing before getting terribly far into them. I still can't believe Double Dead didn't grab me more than it did. I also did not successfully finish a single volume of short stories, despite reading bits from several.
