Its not been a good year lol.
Having been arrested down the London Underground and latterly completing 3 months bail with a very generous Police Caution, i called it a day on three years in London and headed to North America. Toronto, Montreal, New York and Philadelphia... I was three weeks into a 2 month trip and Philly held a lot of promise. A few big, never explored drains...
...and two abandoned subway stations.
The first of these stations i explored with no problems, running in via an open tunnel portal, between trains. The second saw me getting ready to leap down a 9ft high vent shaft. Sadly, before i could jump, the concrete beneath me gave way and i fell, landing on my side, rather painfully, while deeply gashing my hand and crushing my Ulnar nerve. Barely able to walk, i stumbled from the abandoned section of a live station (the line i was on was backwater and had shortened platforms) to the live section, finding to my dismay that i was locked in. I sat, wondering if i should just wait an hour until the station opened or call 911. I was in the USA with no insurance (absent-mindedness at its worst) and naturally didnt want the Police showing up...
Then they did! A sole Transit Police officer appeared at the top of the stairs, descended, barking questions at me, until he saw all the blood. I explained my situation and upon running a clean criminal record, he told me to come up the stairs. Forty minutes sitting down had seen to the end of my walking capability and in the end Fire Rescue had to come and lift me out.
Upon reaching hospital i was quickly x-rayed and told id fractured my acetabulum (the socket the femur bone joints into in the hip) with one clean break and two cracks. Four days later they installed three pins in my hip and 5 days after that i was discharged, picked up by my Aunt and Uncle, who very kindly detoured from Ottawa down to Philly, then took me back to rural Manitoba, where im now staying for the next 10 weeks until i can walk without crutches.
How did i pay the estimated $30'000 for my surgery? I didnt. It seems my 'travelling' lifestyle had the hospital deciding to write off my costs and as such the US government will foot the bill. Just like Obama would have it ;)
I should make a full recovery, given people have shattered their pelvis and recovered. By comparison, my injury was quite mild, however i may need surgery again to repair the nerve damage in my arm... i seem to have squashed my funny bone nerve and as such the ring and pinky fingers on my right hand are numb.
This is the second time ive failed to tour the USA. Id planned to go onto Detroit, MSP, Tulsa, Dallas, Denver, Vegas and L.A. Last time, in 2005, i was denied entry. No problems getting in this time. Instead i ended up pulling the kind of injury that the elderly usually get. Ill be Australia bound upon regaining my walking capability.
Titanium yo.
