Adelaide n the Last Demotion.

Jan 24, 2008 01:02

South Australia is bloody arid. Not Red Centre arid, but arid enough. The hot dry winds blasted my car all the way from Melbourne n i arrived just in time to have a shower, meet up with Elfen, Wizard, Drac, Mr India n Bongarse to goin check out a partially demolished cinema.

The house i was staying at, Drac n Laque residing, was like Adelaide's answer to Notre Dame (the Mulgoa one), huge n odd n full of animals, parrots, dogs, fish, ferrets n frogs. Headed over to India n Elfens n shot the shit for a few hours then I went with Laque n did St Peters Twins. We unintentionally scared the crap out of some school kids who'd been having a choof in the completely bone dry drain. As they ran off up the tunnel we headed up Jammin', a strange slate floored side tunnel, before climbing out onto the pavement via a gutterbox.

Zorga's was next. Bone dry drains are a trip out.

Met up with Mr India whos got the fastest Lada Niva ev0r. Powered by a 2 litre twin overhead cam, 4 barrel carbied Lancia motor. Christ the bastard goes hard!
We did Looney Tunes, listening to mobile phone mp3's on the way thru, before meeting up with the mad posse to do Adelaide Darkie.

Radelaide Darkie is the cities premiere drain, fulla freaky old sections n abandoned side tunnelz that involve behind enemy lines -like skirmish crawls up tiny rcps to access.

Next day i met up with Adelaides prodigal sons, Pizzy n Eli, jumped in the Torrie n hooned up thru the hills to Eli's tomb, a huge long water supply tunnel, cathedral arched with massive black stoned bare rock sections.

Once everyone else got home from work we all met up n did the Torrens River Bridgeroom, which beyond being a hoot to get into, contained a trampoline n inflatable sofa. Hilarity ensued.
With Willymans Valiant in tow we headed up to the hills again n took in a big abandoned reservoir.

Day before Demotion i helped India set up, driving round a few drains sticking up clues n envelopes in Ajax n Cockpump Drains. The skies then opened n we headed to the Airport to get Nym, Ogre n Onyx, stopping to swop the Torana for the famous HT Woody. The rain caused a fair amount of stress for the Demotion organizers as a few drains flooded, Looney tunes to the rooftop:

Unfortunately, mp3 sound equipment that had been stored in safe boxes got washed away. DEmotion organizers got very stressed lol.

That evening the huuuuge posse (deep breath: OgreOnyxPizzyMrIndiaWizardJayDracWillymanAthPipTube LaqueCurlyBlackduckSkiz666RodentEver) met up in the mountains n walked to a freight train tunnel, through it, then up the sides of the embankment to access the vent tunnel that runs above the length of the train tunnel, holes in the floor allowing smoke to vent from the ceiling of the train tunnel. We all squeezed in n waited 20 minutes for a train.
When it arrived... my God, the thundering roar of three Diesel locomotives blasting their hot, black, sooty exhaust smoke up into the tunnel i was sitting in... phoarr, i stared for split second down the hole as the fiery, belching, chugging exhausts spewed forth the sounds smells n temperatures of hell, before it all became too much n i closed my eyes n held my breath as the heat n roar n stench carried on past.

Was rad.

DEmotion was radder. With not a cloud in the sky n moderate heat, we all met in a park by Cafe Dianetics, got separated into our teams(mine was the Soylent Green Mufti Boys: Tube, Adrock n Eli) n started off by racing up Cafe to collect the first clues and an Egg, painted green who we were told was our 5th team member n had to be looked after...
We were then directed to Schweppervescance Drain, then onto K-Mart Drain. So far mostly straight clues. We'd picked up a few promotion cards n toothbrushes by the time we got to St Peters. There we had to make an origami boat n encountered Jammin tunnel rigged up with fairy lights n motion detectors.
Zorgas contained a checkpoint we had to wait till the team ahead of us emerged. Once it was our turn we found the drain decked out in UV lights n a man n woman standing beneath them wearing leotards that left way too little to the imagination. We were put thru various easy tests (mine was to do 20 pushups) which we passed all cept one of the dexterity challenges which i fucked up.

Over to Adelaide Darkie but not before absorbing Rodent from the blue team (Mr India injured his shoulder n accidentally locked the Kingswoods keys in the boot) Walking up Adelaide we finally encountered Elfen the main organizer. We got into a line up, biggest to smallest feet then don a pair of flippers n goggles then run 100m up the tunnel to a UV n streamer drenched room containing Traceroute, armed with a supersoaker. We had to retrieve a toy car from the floor. My feet hurt by the end lol. All 5 of us did it in 7 minutes.

From there we went onto a few more drains, guessing from clues where to go next, collecting promotions, toothbrushes n army men as we found them wedged into cracks n gaps. The second last drain contained multiple roof grilles hung from each was a bag of some sort. Each back contained point scoring goodies... lost, in amongst popcorn...

We arrived at St Pauls Retreat drain at 16:30, just as the orange team showed up. The key we'd gotten two drains earlier opened a safety deposit box n that was us finished. We then stopped at TTP drain to gain an extra 50 points, then filled out the trivia questions n brain benders.

MAD PARTYING ensued at Drac n Laques afterwards till 5am. at 9pm the winners were announced. Turned out our team WON! We beat the Pink team by almost 600 points. Partying re-ensued.

My last day n we all went up to Eli's Tomb, after which the Melbourne Cave Clan contingency took off home, leaving us Sydders with the Radlaidians. We all went out for Chinese that evening, lol, 14 Cave Clanners squished round a big table in a downtown Adelaide restaurant eating Sanchoy Bow. Off to Pizzy's house then out to an abandoned quarry. Then i had to get to bed before driving non stop for 14 hours to get back to Sydney on time to start work.

Ive got 10 rolls of film to process on Friday. Pics after that.
Meantime, heres a pic of me in Greatstairway, taken by Carmie, n with a little point n click no less...
