Subsidence.

While wandering thru the large paved area between the Entertainment Centre and the Light Rail in Hay Street the other day, i noticed a large elongated area that had been fenced off, right in the middle of the square. A quizzical look at Ogre got the response 'Darling Harbour'.

Jeez. They had to fence off a large section just cossa the old Hay/Lackey St Sewer section of Darling Harbour drain is collapsing.

I guess it is 150 years old and has collapsed previously,

Loose Stones:

We were able to climb up to the street thru the hole above the pile of rubble:

The busted section, which is now part of the overflow tunnel:

Now, as i posted last year, its been reinforced: (pic by Floss)

Next they'll either regrout it (hopefully) or concrete over the nice masonry.

Meantime, its nice to see the sign posted to the fence which rattles on about a 'Collapsing, Heritage listed sewer tunnel, built by convicts who were specially shipped over from London back in 1853'

The system, while no London or Minneapolis Drain, is nevertheless fuckin rad and my fave in Sydney. Covering over 6kms in total tunnelage (side tunnels, overflows etc) with a 2.9km long main tunnel its nice n varied.

Sydney Water has had an interesting heritage review done on the old bugger. It'll only make sense to those who know the Chinatown.Darling Harbour/Surrey Hills area of Sydney, but gives you an idea:

Also, someone was asking about the Busbys Bore Shaft we found after finally getting the lid open in Moore Pk Rd. Heres the pic of the shaft, sans ladder and indeed as we found out, breathable air:

Busbys Bore is the oldest tunnel in Australia, built between 1827 and 1837 and running 3 odd kms from Hyde Pk to Centennial Pk, with an additional half odd km of useless side tunnels. Noones been down there in 80 odd years and that includes The Cave Clan. Its been one of our few failures.
