A. has been laid low by the same flu that Charlotte had last week.  Yesterday he missed out on my Aunt's birthday party.  Grilled pork loins, settler beans, "oriental" salad (that coleslaw and ramen noodle thing), green salad, lemonade and deviled eggs from the chickens we could hear clucking in their house nearby (one was a double yolker).  I brought the cake, and it turned out pretty good.  Chocolate zucchini cake (moistest chocolate cake ever) that I did in a 9x13 pan, dumped it out and sliced it in half.  Put the bottom layer back in the pan and laid down a layer of cream cheese mixed w/ a little powdered sugar and raspberry jam.  Put down a layer of raspberry jam thinned down a smidge w/ some raspberry liqueur that A. had downstairs.  Put on the top layer and frosted it w/ a fudgy frosting . hmmmmm.  I did the 9x13 so that you could more easily have a smaller piece, not that any of us did.  :)

This weekend Old World Wisconsin (http://oldworldwisconsin.wisconsinhistory.org/) opened back up, so I had thought about heading over there this weekend.  Even thought A. had to stay home I decided to go over there today.  So piled the girls in the car and got there about noon.  It was the summer harvest and Laura Ingalls Wilder weekend so there were lots of little girls there, many dressed up for the look-a-like pageant.  But that also meant that there were lots of kids activities.  This was the first time I had every really ridden the tram around the site, but I thought that hiking all the way around would not be the wisest idea w/ a 2 and 4 yr old.  Hit the Finnish farms first where Charlotte tried her hand at crocheting (the interpreter did most of the work on her little bracelet) and laundry.  We did walk one of my favorite paths through the woods between the Finnish and Danish sections.  At Pedersen the girls got to jump in hay piles.  We headed out to the Norwegian section for some school, checked out the sheep, and Charlotte made a length of rope.  Trammed our way back to the village for a timeless snack of Fanta orange and chocolate chip cookies in the shade.

In the village they had a horse powered thresher (actually 2 hsp), they were making popcorn at the stagecoach inn, helped crank the ice cream maker at the washerwoman's house, checked out the general store, and church, and the shoemaker's store/home.  Charlotte asked if there were elves there.  ;)  Saw more sheep and a lamb.  Headed out to the German farms and saw more horses, pigs, chickens, and some wild turkeys.  They also had a steam powered thresher working one of the fields which Katherine kept calling a steamy train. *

On the way home we quick stopped by my Aunt's house so Charlotte could see her little corgi, Duncan.  Charlotte had just asked Ingrid when we could see Duncan, so I thought why not.  She ran around giggling like a banshee and then threw the ball for him.  We were only there for maybe 20 min, but Duncan looked pretty wiped by the time we left.

Of course we couldn't make it home without a detour into Frostys for some frozen custard.

One of those really good days w/o conflict or battles of wills, lots of treats and lots of fun in the sun.

*For those of you who would like to experience a lot of steam powered tractors and the like, come to the Thresheree outside of Milton, WI later this summer The steam train is very popular with my girls.
