So I am wanting to get our screened porch more usable now that we fixed the broken screen that was the perfect size for a cat to squeeze out  (hmmmm how did that happen?).  Problem is that I want the breezes and outside air w/o mosquitoes that the screens provide, however there is no overhang from the roof, the screens are floor to ceiling, and the ( Read more... )

You should be able to buy outdoor canvas at fabric shops. That would make decent curtains. Might be pricey, though, especially for the length you want.

I second Hil's suggestion for faux-matchstick rollup blinds.

As for furniture...is there a roof? What about hanging a hammock or two? Or getting a couple of those hanging canvas chairs? Those woudl be very loungy/comfy options, that are made to be outdoors and thus ought to stand up to the HARSH HARSH CONDITIONS of your screen porch. :)

Another idea: I like the look of faux wicker patio furniture. It ought to be weatherproof, and looks pretty, and I bet could be fairly comfy. I don't know prices, though. Still, a faux wicker chaise or two would take you pretty far.

I like the Craigslist idea.

My high school friend, Lisa's, parents built a screen porch on the back of their garage. Like yours, it was floor-to-ceiling screen. Like, walls made of screening. They made the roof out of a piece of corrugated fiberglass, though. I don't remember...does yours have a roof? I think for furniture they just used lawn chairs. And it had indoor-outdoor carpet. I guess my story is not actually all that helpful.

I can't think of any way you can keep books out there. I mean, it's more an OUTDOOR space than an INDOOR space. Hmmmm...thinking of it as a bug-free outdoor space might help the thinking process.
