Well the entire thing about blowing up airplanes isn’t anything new. In fact and old quote goes something like ever since man created the airplane and desired to fly there has been the guy next door who desires to bring them back down. They happen all the time. In fact in the 1970s while my dad was a cop for SDPD some guy hijacked a plane and threatened to blow it up while landing at the airport up on Otay Mesa, he landed at the TJ airport instead which is why no one heard of it. Some more famous incidents include the Lockerbie Scotland bombing of a PanAm 747.
Politically, going after aircraft is a big statement maker. The 9/11 hijackers specifically chose United and American Airlines not only for their name but also because they are huge huge business that can afford these huge planes. The PanAm bombing mentioned above affected their business so much that they had to shut down Pan Am airlines, one of the biggest airlines of the time. Also Aircraft manufacturing is one of the cornerstones of the American economy. Boeing makes multi-billion dollar contacts each year with overseas airlines. Take that away and the economy will suffer.
Next you have the Shock and Awe factor. You blow up yourself or a car and you kill 50 people tops and you hit the news as just some other guy. Blow up a mid-sized airliner and you have at least 200 dead minimum. And the fact that it’s an airplane means its all the more sensationalized by the media and will be covered for weeks to come. Your face and your cause will be splashed all over the media. Following 9/11 we all now know who Mohammed Atta was and what Al-Queda stood for. Just blowing up an airliner is scary enough but when you turn it into a weapon then things become even worse. Watch the movie Executive Decision. Terrorists take over a plane with a huge nerve gas bomb. Blow it up over a metropolitan area and you can scratch that city off the map, just like if you had a dirty nuke. Or else a worst case scenario like in the book Executive Orders. During a State of the Union speech when you have almost all the government heads in one room and you crash a plane there you wipe out the entire head of government and then you have real chaos. 9/11 followed along the same thing. Crash two fuel laden airliners into symbols of American Power and you can and will destroy objects and lives. Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineers build weapons. Civil and Structural Engineers build targets.
