RANT: Twenty-first century shitheads.

I saw an advertisement a day or so ago, on the side of a city bus. It really stuck with me. I haven't been able to find an image of it online, and I wasn't able to photograph it when I saw it, but my recollection of it has been clarified by well-seasoned, well-aged irritation ( Read more... )

Actually, this comment made me think about how accurate "practicing 21st century medicine since 1751" is, in the sense that they're acknowledging the fact that racism, sexism, and ableism still influences their treatment of patients. Same as the year 1751! I am now certain that that is exactly what they were trying to get across.

Also: Oh my god your stories about hospitals. Amazing, just so amazing. Get out of here with your peeing blood and your ear infections! You deserve them for being a LEZZIE CRIPPLE. Have I ever told you about when I had mono, and the doctor gave me sleeping pills and told me that they were meant to settle my stomach? Because I was being "loud and difficult to manage," according to the nurse? Yes. That is the answer. Drug the person.

It's interesting, because it is very much a middle ground. Like, hey, I love me some scientific discoveries, and I enjoy Western medicine. I understand magnets!* And gravity! And why we wash instruments between patients! I'm just also saying that DOCTORS ARE FUCKING HUMAN. Warrrgarbl.

It was holyfuck amazing! And I was eighteen and kind of new at the whole "going to the hospital by myself" thing and also really new at the "standing up to people" thing (still not very good at that one!) and so I was like, "Um. I don't like this? I guess I deserve it? Hospitals are always right... right?" Awesome! HIGH KICK FOR MODERN MEDICINE.

Dude, I have not read that! I am going to have to read that! Bam! I'm already picking up a book about the history of immigration in America at the public library. Risky guess: if they own that book, it will probably be checked in. (I am the only Humorless Feminist who goes there. None of the romance novels I want, but ALL OF THE MARGARET FULLER.)
