"Should I shave?" my cousin asked.
I glanced up and evaluated. "No, I don't think so. It's scruffy, not mangy."
"The look of the fashionably bereaved," he said.
A moment later, he wondered aloud, "Bereft? Berooving?"
"Bearhooved," I said.
"Ah, the little known conjugation," he agreed.

popoffacork stories went live, and so I have briefly paused my determined march through the yuletide archive to determinedly march through those stories. I'm going to edit this to add better summaries and thoughts as I work through the stories.
- A cage went in search of a bird. MCR, Frank/Bob. Frank is a sex slave who is liberated and sent to live at Bob's farm; set in a sort of alternate universe US.
- A Different Beat. Panic, Ryan/Spencer. Brendon plays the drums for Panic, because Spencer is busy playing second guitar; short and thoughtful piece.
- Couldn't Get Out. Panic, Brendon/Jon. Brendon and Jon don't know one another, which makes swapping bodies kind of complicated.
- If There Is A God, I Thank Him Every Day for Bringing Us Patrick. MCR, FOB, Patrick/Pete. Bob didn't take Brian up on the offer to join MCR, but he suggested Patrick instead. Pete still manages to find Patrick and fall for him.
- Without a Disguise. FOB, Pete/Patrick. Eerie monster story, about a creature that feeds on fear, who enters Patrick's body and slowly merges with his personality (due to the creature's fascination with Pete). It sounds a bit silly when I summarize it, but I think it was nicely done.
- The thin line between "maybe" and "yes." Panic, Jon/Spencer. A sweet, easy story about how Spencer and Jon start sleeping together and keep on doing so, without any sort of official starting point.
- We're not playing games, and we're not playing lovers. Panic, Spencer/Shane. Spencer and Shane have both been in love with Brendon, at various times in their lives, but Brendon is oblivious. When Spencer and Shane get together, it is with a laughing look at Brendon (who doesn't know what they're laughing at). Promised sequel with a threesome.
- In Jerusalem Engines. Panic/Empires, Jon/TomRad. Jon is an engineer who comes back to Chicago to negotiate with Beckett's crew for a crucial part; while he waits for it to be shipped in, he stays with Tom, who used to work on that crew and who is clearly in love with Jon. Gorgeous, tightly contained story.
- Faster, Faster. FOB, Pete and Patrick.
- Courtship in 4/4 Time. Panic, Spencer/Brendon.
- Save it Were Lightly. Killers/Panic, Brendon/Brandon Flowers.
- Mind Over the Law of Conservation of Matter. Panic, Jon/Spencer.
- Radiant. Hush Sound/The Sounds, Cobra Starship/The Academy Is; Greta/Maja, Gabe/William.
- No particular place to go. MCR, Bob/Ray.
- Dear Catastrophe Waiter. Panic, Brendon/Ryan.
- Til the End. The Hush Sound, Chris/Darren.
- I'm On My Way, I Don't Know Where I'm Going. Panic, Ryan/Spencer.
- And the baroque is over. FOB, MCR; Pete/Patrick, Frank/Gerard.
- When you say it's going to happen now (well, when exactly did you mean?). Panic, Brendon/Ryan.
- It's Not Always About Zombies. MCR, Ray/Mikey. Ray is an awkward video store clerk and Mikey is Ray's favorite customer.
- Count Down From Today. MCR, FOB; Bob/Frank, Pete/Gerard. Grad school AU!!!!! Okay, obviously it was written for me. Features BRIAN THE MELVILLE SCHOLAR, which is a sure sign that the person has read my lj. Bob and Frank are officemates; Bob has a loser crush on Frank, but Frank's just looking to get laid. UST and a sweet, goofy realization, with some great moments of grad school realism. Loved it, seriously.
- Take the guitar player for a ride. Panic/Empires, Jon/TomRad. Tom gets kicked out of his band, and he goes downhill, fast. He slams into Jon, and Jon stops him. I love the way the author used the style to reflect the way that Tom felt. Sharp and lovely.
- Merry we are. Cobra, Alex/Ryland. They're troubadours in a world that's filled with magic, and they find themselves in a fix. I love the way this feels, the warm tone and the feeling of being in the midst of a fairy tale.
When the authors are revealed, I'm probably going to post a more thorough author's note than I did with the fic, because god forbid I ever shut up.

Speaking of which (both reveals and refusing to quiet), Yuletide authors were revealed, which means that I can tell you that I wrote
What They Say About Gay Medievalists. It's in the Keen Eddie fandom, Eddie/Monty; a manuscript is stolen from the Bodleian library, and Eddie and Monty are called in to investigate. I wish I had been able to work more consistently on the story -- it feels like it could have been way better to me -- but I'm glad I was finally forced to write in Keen Eddie. (If only for
fearlesstemp's sake.)
Today's goals include: continuing to read popoffacork fic, writing comment fiction, and maybe plowing through a couple of chapters of a book on my reading list. Start the year off right, my friends. I hope you're well.
