[So he had died... Riff had suspected as much but some part of him had still hoped he'd managed to... The servant repressed the soft, sad sigh that tried to slip past his lips and instead made his way to his master]
[Here, Cain, have a loyal butler coming your way with a reassuring little smile. He's carrying a cup of tea, steam swirling up from the top of the hot drink, and it probably looks a little strange since there's no tray but... Oh, well. He offers the mug to Cain, with a soft murmur]
It's still quite hot, my lord. Do take care.
I've managed to secure most of the supplies you required, sir, including ammunition.
[Riff watched him with a mix of fondness and worry. If Cain wanted to talk about the matters he's written about, that would be his choice, however. He knew Riff would listen. He nodded slightly.]
I explored the perimeters, as well as the inner parts of the city to the best of my ability. It is quite useful that at least there is a map available, isn't it, sir?
[Aaand lengthy report mode, go!]The area marked as a shopping district holds a fair amount of supplies and several buildings that store clothing. If my lord would like, we can go together sometime to secure more climate-appropriate attire. I located a munitions supply near the same area. There also appears to be a pub of some sort, though I did not step inside

[ Cain listened to his report quietly lifting the cup to his lips to sip the tea before speaking. ]
The clothing seems to be adequate although that is a good idea, Riff. I'm not sure about visiting the pub but perhaps depending on the nature of the place. [ A brief pause to sip before he turned to look at Riff ]
Was the graveyard as poorly tended as the rest of the city?
[Riff was quietly very pleased with the fact he'd managed to get a decent supply of tea, from several kind people in fact. Cain could at least enjoy some small comfort here. He nodded at the question.]
It was, my lord. Other than the buildings that citizens regularly live in or otherwise occupy, most of the city is in very poor shape.
Also, I've been informed people here return to life shortly after they die, and if this is true, I am not quite certain what purpose this graveyard serves or who is buried in it.
Re: [commentlog]sins_of_fatherNovember 25 2009, 04:26:30 UTC
Interesting. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take a closer to look and see what the headstones say at some point. Did you see any plants or anything useful you recognized?
[ Cain sighed quietly sipping his tea before he closed his eyes.
I'm sure my father would have liked to know their methods of returning people to life.
No, I'm afraid there was little I recognized. This must truly be a different planet. The little I saw of the forest seemed to contain foreign foliage as well.
[Riff watched his lord for a moment before quietly stepping behind him, hands moving to massage Cain's shoulders soothingly, his voice soft and trying to be reassuring.]
Please, my lord. You mustn't strain yourself dwelling so much on... such matters. I hate to see you so. But if you wish to talk, I am here, Lord Cain. I live only to ease my lord's sorrows.
Re: [commentlog]sins_of_fatherNovember 25 2009, 04:48:39 UTC
The properties of the plants could be useful if we had a way of testing them properly here... [ Cain mused quietly before he shifted slightly under the first touch of Riff's hands ] I don't intend to strain myself but perhaps reflecting on what has happened will give me some clue to how we were chosen to come here. Given what I've done, it's rather unexpected anyone would bring me to somewhere other than where I was meant to go upon death.
[ He set the empty cup aside before tipping his head back to look up at Riff ]
[Riff mused, continuing to rub Cain's shoulders and neck as he listened, then responded softly, looking down at his master with gentle eyes]
How are we to know where people are truly meant to go after death, my lord? Perhaps it isn't as clear as many would have us believe. Or perhaps my lord simply wasn't meant to...
[he couldn't quite bring himself to say it. Even if he knew Cain had done so willingly, Riff had never intended for him to die as well.]
...What I mean is, sir, I think you are meant to live. In better conditions, but I suppose we must take what we are given.
Re: [commentlog]sins_of_fatherNovember 25 2009, 05:34:37 UTC
I know you think that, Riff but ...
[ Cain sighed quietly letting his eyes half-close]
My death brought an end to the curse my line carried. Merry will start a new history for the Hargreaves and perhaps things will be different for future generations.
It may not be an ideal place, but one can live without the shadow of a past from a different world.
[His arms slipped around Cain's shoulders as he leaned down, resting his forehead against his master's lightly, as he used to do when Cain was younger]
[Cain was right, of course. Riff's chest ached as he realized he didn't really know what to say to that, how to reassure him entirely. Almost whispering, he didn't move, save to press forward slightly so that Cain's back rested against his chest, as if to shield the marks he spoke of.]
It's over, Lord Cain. It's different. Even if others appear... the circumstances have changed. Perhaps in our favor.
And I will remain by your side, my lord. Regardless of what comes. Always.
Re: [commentlog]sins_of_fatherNovember 25 2009, 06:44:24 UTC
[ Cain didn't pull away sighing instead before he nodded in agreement with Riff's words. He knew the man meant them but past experience had displayed how trite words could be. ]
We will see how different it is, I don't think rendering judgment so quickly is a good idea. People don't change, no matter how circumstances do.
[...and the only changes in people Cain had seen were for the worse, weren't they? Riff winced slightly before he could stop himself, though hopefully Cain missed it since he wasn't facing him.
His arms tightened just a little around the boy's shoulders.]
Forgive my rashness, my lord. I only wish for your well-being. If only...

Thank you, Riff. I am sure they will all prove useful. Did you observe anything of interest while you were out?
