random, but neat...

so, my friend damien calls me up last week, on sort of short notice, to tell me that he's got some paintings in a gallery opening that night and if i get the chance he'd love it if i stopped by, it's his first gallery opening ever. so, i drop by before i leave for illinois and i stay for the few minutes that i have. i figured since he personally called and invited me, plus it being his first public showing, that i wanted to at least drop by and show my support. so, i got to chatting with him about the opening, and what he had to say was so inspiring. he apparently booked this opening about a year ago, in the hopes that a looming deadline would force him to do something. the three paintings in the gallery are literally the first three paintings he's ever done. he's a creative guy, but not much of an artist. there was no real artistic purpose to his paintings, they were all about color and texture, but there was only a personal purpose to them, that of motivation. he created them specifically for the gallery opening, and he participated in the gallery opening only in the hopes of actually getting the motivation to accomplish something. it clearly worked because he had three paintings on the wall, and in the process of getting those three done, it gave him the motivation to get done other creative projects he's been wanting to do. i dunno, i just found this sort of inspirational and thought i'd share it. i have a new found respect for him. so, i guess the moral of this tale is that if you cant get motivated, find yourself a deadline, it might just help...
