This is a very tangible (ouch fire burns!) example of why the Pot Prohibition in this country is doing more harm than good. The Mexican Cartels, I think everyone can agree, are dangerous, but there are plenty of farms in NATIONAL forests- in cases where we might be talking private property I might get defensive, but gang run farms on American Public lands is not a risk I personally am willing to take. From here on I'll support only the decriminalization and/or legalization of Cannabis. Visible harm has been done here by carelessness and illegal activity due to the demand for a commonly accepted but federally illegal substance. Visible harm to people's homes, the public lands, the environment as well as the governments of California and the United States and Santa Barbara in particular. The PUBLIC should be up in arms at this point. The War on Drugs has not worked, but if they honestly want it to the stakes have to be reviewed, the objectives altered and the tactics changed. The current strategy has not be effective in either mitigating demand, curbing the actions of these cartels for instance (and really you can't, they are hydras- not a simple dragon one can slay). The only solution I see is to decriminalize the substance as far as medical and preferably personal use as soon as possible, maintain the illegal operations while upholding the developing legal institutions and organizations that seek care taker relationships in particular and build on local communities rather than the black market.
