He yelled and raged in return. He hurt the man who looked on him with pity - the man who looked into him and saw beyond all the rot, anger, and pain. He struck out to crush his hopes and his affection and his care. He did it every time. And still.

I want to help you.

That man always came back. Once, they had been friends. They had been the closest of friends. Just now, now they were enemies... or they should have been. Only he seemed to remember it, clung to it as if it were the only thing to keep him from drowning. Yet his former friend and constant enemy was drowning nearby and trying to dislodge him from his one safety out of spite.

I want to help you.

He didn't need help! He was beyond help! He was perfectly fine!

I want to help you.

It was a terrible litany, a cruel mantra, over and over and over.

I want to help you.

It was going to kill him.

Please, just let me try.

He couldn't let it happen.
