A house is never still in darkness to those who listen intently; there is a whispering in distant chambers, an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch rises. Ghosts were created when the first man awoke in the night.

“What the…Shell Bell? What the heck’re you doin’?”
“Sleepin’.” Four year old Shelley insisted, struggling to climb into her big brother’s bed while hanging on for dear life to the fuzzy toilet bowl blue teddy bear she’d dubbed Mushy.
Sixteen year old Ty sighed and rolled his eyes in the dark, but leaned over to scoop up Shelley and settle her in bed with him.
“C’mere, rugrat. But I hear one peep outta you, it’s curtains and y’all go back to your own bed, dealio?”
“Dweelio.” She replied with an emphatic nod, reaching out with one tiny hand to hook her pinky around his, which all but swallowed her small hand.
Once Shelley was tucked under the covers, facing Ty, he pulled her close to rub her back.
“You wanna tell me why you’re sleepin’ in here?”
“Like’a big bed.”
“And?...”
Shelley pouted, but finally shoved Mushy between them and rested her chin on his big soft head. “And house is talkin’.”
“It’s just settlin’, sugar plum.”
“It’s talkin’! It goes ‘meepa meepa UHHHHH.’”
Ty laughed a little, making Shelley pout. “Baby girl, that’s probably just Chaz or Daddy walkin’ to the bathroom. The floors squeak, baby, it’s okay.”
Shelley shook her head emphatically, pouting still harder. “I hear talkies an’ I feel coldies on my goosie neck!”
More laughter, only this time Ty tickled her neck and yawned. “Darn straight, goose neck. G’won t’ sleep, Shell Bell. I gotta test in the mornin’. Y’all can stay, butcha gotta be quiet, got it?”
“Gots it.” She whispered, clutching Mushy tight and burrowing against her big brother, shutting her eyes as tight as she could. Grownups didn’t understand the monsters in the dark, and Ty was already pretty old. Tomorrow, she would talk to Chaz and Chet. They’d believe her. Right now, Daddy was working and Momma’s bed was just too big to climb.
Ty was big enough to keep the monsters away.
