Jack was listless. His stay at home had been all about hard, rewarding labor. His brief stint in Rapture had been all about... well... survival. On the station, he had yet to find a purpose. The robots apparently took care of everything and there were (save for that mysterious Big Daddy look alike) no apparent hostiles. He found himself with more free time than he knew what to do with.
With a horse made of crystal he patrolled the land satchel full of supplies, his trusty pipe wrench, and a lot of unanswered questions, he sets off to explore the station. With all the things he has heard about the place- the mysteriously absent residents- he is expecting them to come crawling out of the vents. Hell, if he found a few audio diaries with tasty little tidbits of information lying about, he would be happy as all get-out.
