Max is back in the gym for the same reasons Wash is; in an attempt to work herself to the point of exhaustion (because she doubts that clarity is going to be achieved no matter how hard she tries). She's slightly less preoccupied this time because she knew what to expect, and while it's not any more pleasant to realize that you're not up to the standards you should be, she's more aware of her surroundings because it's not weight as heavily on her mind.

So she hears Wash as he enters and turns around, immediately recoiling when she sees his hand reach for his gun. Her feet move into a fighting stance, one foot in front of the other, as subtly as she can move them. She's still tired, exhausted at this point, but that doesn't mean she's not still dangerous.

"I don't sleep," she replies, and she relaxes the slightest bit as he moves his hand away from his belt, though her muscles remain coiled and ready to spring into action if the occasion arises where she needs to defend herself. "And so are you."

She remains in the stance as he moves closer, though he doesn't seem to have any intentions of attacking - one can never be too careful, and the fact that the gun is still in sight is making her nervous.

"For the past hour or so." Her eyes stay on him for a moment or two, then she drops the stance and gestures behind her. "Feel free, I'm pretty much done here."

The jumpiness is largely due to the gun's presence; watching your sister get shot to death in front of you and getting shot in the chest by the clone of your nine-year-old self will instill a pretty big fear of guns within a person. She's also very aware that she's being eyed up, which makes her nervous and makes her wonder if she's making herself too obvious in spite of her efforts to appear as ordinary as possible.

"I'm pretty new here," she says, relaxing visibly as he removes the gun from around his waist. "I've only been here a few weeks."

"You obviously missed the mistletoe around the station," she comments dryly. "Yeah, it's just me."

His reaction almost makes her laugh in spite of herself; her own experiences with the mistletoe weren't exactly things she wanted to remember, either, and she doesn't want to laugh at his misfortune, but his reaction definitely wasn't what she was expecting. But she smothers the urge (although a quick upturn of her lips is probably noticed by him).

"Max," she says, her eyes locking with his as they land on hers. "You?"

"Thought you said there was nothing welcoming about it," she shoots back, the almost-smile still in place on her lips.

"Yeah," she says, nodding. "How long's it been for you?"

It happens quicker than one would think.

"Not even a good bar story? Damn, that's bleak."
