Cloud had only been in the military a good year now. He wasn't all that experienced like some of those SOLDIERs were, so his reflexes were still a bit off. But he was paranoid enough to sleep lightly, and he'd definately heard that voice.

Snapping to attention, the gun was out, pointed at nothing in particular and too many varying directions to count. Once full consciousness caught up with him, however, he calmed down upon seeing one of the people he'd spoken to over the network - the one that'd talked down to him like he was wasting his life away just because he was in the military. Almost everyone his age joined, and for the life of him he couldn't figure out how that could possibly be wrong.

His grip on the gun was still tight, still shaking a little, but lowered into his lap. It must've only been a good hour or so since he'd first fallen asleep, so that drained feeling was still there, niggling on his mood. He could keep it back long enough to address the man civilly, the helmet adjusted from where it'd slipped to the side during his nap.

"Just... surveying the area, sir."

This was just sad. Not just because of the kid, but the fact that there were many just like him. Born and blood-bred to the way of the gun.

Raimi didn't so much like guns. He didn't like being around people with them, or being at the opposite end of them. This he became quite familiar with fairly recently, being surrounded by military himself, a mile underneath any hope of familiarity that made sense.

"Surveying the area." Raimi echoed it, and it still sounded ridiculous. "You do realize you've got a map on you, right? There's nothing to survey. And what the hell are you doing sleeping on a bench."

When Raimi first showed up, he was pretty sure there was at least the barracks that were open to him. Some private, albeit less than comfortable quarters were also available.

This was entirely unnecessary.

If he was going to get up in the world, he was going to find work.

He was going to earn his place on this ship like he was supposed to, and not crawl to anything with two legs for help if he didn't understand. Because he wanted to be able to learn for himself. Though from the rate it's been working out... it really hasn't. He's probably letting his pride get too much in the way of survival.

"I'm aware." He said, a little smaller than his last response. He probably wouldn't have found this neighbourhood without it, in all honesty, and simply be wandering the woods for the next three weeks until he'd starved and froze to death.

"It's nothing I can't handle."

And that was all he had to say about that matter. Swinging his legs over the side of the bench, the boy slipped the M4 back into its holster, starting to clean up the discarded plastic bowls and spoons. If this guy was just going to keep finding him, then he might as well just keep moving. He didn't want to hear any of it.

He didn't understand.

Sure it wasn't. Or that was what Raimi wanted to say. But he knew better after his last encounter. While the programmer may have his moments, he wasn't entirely inept when it came to socializing with the people around here.

"Uh huh." The level of skepticism in his tone just then might as well have made all of the aforementioned thoughts just void, however, had Raimi added more to that thought.

Judging from his hotel of choice and the minimal selection of food at present, the kid hadn't found work yet. No credits, no service. He wasn't much better off than the first few days Raimi had been.

"The least you can do is fine a better place to sleep, kid. Christ."

Cloud paused in his step, one boot hovering just slightly above the ground. And then it lowers slowly, his grip tightening on the gun's strap, fidgeting a little under his fingers. Didn't it look like he was trying as it was? A bench was a little above what he had found over the past few days - though he remembered something about the barracks being free...

No. He wasn't going to be nursed on by other people.

Real soldiers could take care of themselves, and SOLDIERs excelled at it. If he was going to be in SOLDIER, he couldn't go to every single person, begging for food and company.

"It's nice when you start getting used to it." He responded, a little more seriously, and trying to keep as much tact in his tone as possible. "And it's not a permanent solution. Just... for a few days. Until I can manage better."

Though unseen, his blue eyes were watching the man carefully, wondering at a reaction to his words. Hopefully this wouldn't end with violence, especially so soon after he'd just arrived.

The careful vigil did not go unnoticed. But it wasn't like a whole lot got past Raimi. Or he'd like to think so, in any case. It was just like him, to catch the behavioral patterns of people.

He saw it well enough in this kid to know better. Hell, Raimi wasn't much better -- he was a little shit at that age. It took a very special kind of kid to be told that you were going to rot in Hell at the age of six.

"You know, if you just take the time to look for work or some oddball job, you can make enough to find your own place. Credits are handy like that. But being so self-sufficient, I'm sure you'd know that by now."

Oh yeah, you bet just went there.

"Why are you so interested in my life?" He finally responds, turning around slowly to come face to face with the other. Congratulations, Raimi! You've got his attention. This was quite a feat in itself.

"I'm new here. You probably don't even remember my name. And... frankly, there's not much to remember, yet." That 'yet' was necessary - a sign of what he wanted to do. What he could do, given time. There was no need to say further more on the matter, though.

"If I walk away right now, you'll follow me. Won't you?"

"Because I got nothing better to do." That wasn't necessarily true, though he had to make something of his time. Be it with other people or on his own, he always had some kind of pet project going on.

He forced out a bitter laugh.

"What, you think I got early Alzheimer's or something, kid? Of course I remember your fucking name. Called yourself Cloud Strife on the network." Fucking weird ass names people keep around here.

It wasn't like it was easy for Raimi to forget anything, either. The way moments pass become etched into his brain like an impervious effigy -- he couldn't get rid of it even if he tried.

Cloud's question beckoned a raised eyebrow out of the programmer. "You make it sound like I'm stalking you. Don't flatter yourself -- I'm not into that."
