She's trying a few new techniques. Few of the books here are of help to her -- and why would they be? Even in her own world, the power she has is forbidden, where even knowing of its existence punishable by death and far worse
But there's a few things, and Charles and Sollux have both been helpful, even if often in indirect ways. She sits cross-legged on her bed, with a good strong cup of chamomile, the lights low, just focusing at first.
You'll be facing war and death and pain. Remember -- here, awake, you may just be you, great big failure of a teacher and a writer, but there, there you're power and form.
He mentioned his world, metal and steel, and nightmares of water (all too familiar to her -- dreams of drowning plagued her once, until she found how to conquer them); she knows little of him but that he's pale, and tall, and he seems kind but sad, though with that love of life...
She turns out the lights and sets the half-finished tea aside, laying flat on her back and breathing slowly. Down, deeper down, focus, target. Find his dream among the shifting sea of landscapes. She shifts, brushing the surfaces of a dozen different dreams as she falls, each step taking her into a different landscape (deserts oceans forests childhood homes the space between stars the outside of an airlock the feeling of a sword through the gut tennis balls the smell of fresh cut grass waterfalls steel and oil neon and shadow blood and glass) and she has to stop herself from pausing to help others. She promised. This is a mission.
And at last, she's sure of it, a fragment that across her senses feels like steel and sorrow bound in tears of the sky and feathers forgotten a song of starfire and she pushes through...
She's not sure what she'll find, but she pulls fragments of the dream, trying first to integrate herself, to be, at first, hidden and seamlessly part of whatever events occur. Skyfire's mind will fill in the gaps, placing her in a role appropriate or changing her shape to fit, and she'll work from there.
She steels herself. Nothing here can touch me. I am dreaming and I am dreamed...
