He'd been seeking more of the journal entries, trying to figure out what was going wrong. More than anything, what he'd read so far made him sad. Sarah had been angry, apparently having come from a world where this had happened before, but for his own part this all seemed rather wrong. Where was the proof that it had been the machines?
Nonetheless, he'd taken to carrying his sledgehammer. Just in case.
He was frustrated, too. He wanted to do something about this, even if it was something ineffectual, anything, but they seemed trapped. Like rats.
In a room that looked straight out of a film noir movie, he found that the door was locked. Or rather, the actual button was doing nothing, and his fingers passed right through the old-fashioned doorbell like object superimposed above it.
At which point his communicator chimed, asking him if he wanted to partake in the EXCITING WORLD of EVER BREATH of FANTASY.
"... no," he murmured, still trying to poke at the door. Perhaps it was a simple malfunction. Perhaps it'd go away in a bit.
The communicator chimed again. He ignored it. Eventually, he sighed, dropping his arms to his sides and retreating to one of the plush chairs in the center of the room. Perhaps if he just waited...
Hours later, he reached a section in House of Leaves where the house abruptly came to life, swallowing Tom Navidson whole as he bravely rescued Will's children.
He put the book down slowly. Perhaps not the best reading material for the situation...
"Fine," he said. "Give me an avatar."
He scrolled past the customization options (though he did go for a Fighter class, weapon specialty hammers and clubs) and finished. At the 'name' box, he paused.
It wasn't him. Surely he could give his avatar a name?
Gallahad.
He stood up and tried the door again. To his surprise, this time it worked.
